So we are agreed then? JC isnt 1/3 of the price of others, his costs are actually comparable, for £550 you get a £200 barrel fitted, for a £400 barrel he would be £750 ish. Thats fitted on a "fit for purpose" lathe using basic tooling and guages, producing hunting accuracy rifles. The other guys use tooling thats the best in the business, delivering work to a better than necessary standard. The extra £50 gets you piece of mind that youve had the best.

looking forward to getting my rifle back, i'll do a write up when it arrives, tell you if my £50 was worth it!

I just had a rebarrel job done, if i was you get some quotes and go with what you can afford. Dont get hooked up in the mudslinging thats going on here as 99.9% of the posters couldnt tell one barrel from the other , if you thousands to spend to on a rebarrel/custom rifle like some people imagine they have on this thread youd be better off going to London and getting yourself into Holland and Holland and getting them to make you one.
 
My experience of custom gun work is limited but I had a bad time having a rifle rebarrelled (not a smith mentioned here I hasten to add). The rifle shot very well but when it arrived the barrel wasn't at all what I ordered/was sold. No apologies, no return policy. I and/or friends have since had very good dealings with Steve Kershaw (a star!) and Callum Ferguson. In the future I would go on personal recommendation from folks I know and trust. In the meantime however, I bought a well-used Blaser. I then rebarrelled it myself, using an allen key. It shoots as well as either of the semi customs I've owned.

Barrel discussions are always interesting - I like the different approaches people take to their shooting eg. Once in a lifetime stalk in Mongolia or Namibia and wanting /needing the best and have everything come together. The other aspect is deer stalkers who mainly like the stalk and get as close as possible and use factory ammo. Others shoot fox etc and others do paper at a distance with the need for extreme accuracy.
To use the phrase "you get what you pay for" isn't always accurate in buying barrels - afaik there are some barrels that are button and cut produced rifling which cost the same. Which is the cheaper and more expensive as a product? Would I take the cheap cut barrel or the expensive button barrel?
I don't have a problem with any after market barrel fitted by a competent person if the barrel is correctly chosen for its purpose.
Begarra barrels im sure will do just fine for deer stalking in the uk and many more applications.
If you choose to shoot competition at 1000 yards and beyond, all the details count.
This is a stalking forum, not long distance cross canyon mule shooting. Lets keep the reality of "needs" of what is required to do the job right and not what works best beyond traditional stalking distances.
Deer wont be offended if you use a begarra, remington, sako, Truflite, or Kreiger etc.....

I can get hold of any barrel that a customer wants from any manufacturer. Can you tell me the benefits of using other barrels other than Bergara? You mention a few others.

My machining costs would be the same with any barrel, £55 an hour. If someone wants a £500 barrel then they get one, it's personal choice.

Lmao, basic tooling and gauges, what like Secco, Kennemetal, PTG, Triebel, Mititoyu, Moore and Wright, oh and the new kids on the block Scorpion, who are very good.

Yes that's all my cheap tooling, DTIs, Micrometers and ground pin gauges.

Jeez you sheeple need to get out more. Oh and I don't do "that'll do standards" just so we are clear. :)

I think you hit the nail on the head there Fallow. Go with what you think yourself, that's what I did, I only spent a bit more on my barrel as a treat for myself and knew that I wanted one day maybe shoot targets, hence spending a bit more definitely was a good choice for me as it would have meant ...... possibly....and I say possibly spending more money on a better barrel at a later stage if I had got a cheaper barrel. But saying that there are some cheaper barrels that shoot very very well indeed.

So James, can you please tell us why your customers are saying you are 1/3 of the cost of others? How much did you charge Emcc for a bergarra barrel (fitted, proofed, insured and tax paid)??

No I can't tell you why someone said that, try asking them. Are you insuating I don't pay tax and insurance? Fred in a shed with Chinese lathe might not pay tax or have insurance...I don't have a shed!
 
Thing I love about these threads is those who see fit trying to slate me, make themselves look more stupid than they realise. Facts Gentlemen, facts. Get the facts about my work, then come and see me and tell me how cheap and inferior it is. Ffs
 
A review of Riflesmithing and custom/semi-custom rifles in the UK would be a great thesis for a business studies student.
