Rebirth of a Rook Rifle

Oh SD, you’ve been waiting in the shadows for this moment
In my defence, I used to think that using lead was perfectly OK. However once I started looking at the science of lead and its effects on organisms I am definitely of the conclusion that its not something we want to have exposure to.

I respect your freedom of choice 👍

Ok ish. But I have 40gn non lead on order
Great but there could be a subtle charge of hypocrisy levelled at you!
I've got some non lead ordered for my 3030, I'm actually excited to test them but I do hope it's the only box I ever buy.....
I don't like being directed by hypocrites, especially those in office.

@Heym SR20

Thanks so much for sharing your journey!

I admire your perserverance and your ability and willingness to learn “on the go” so to speak.

I will never be able to do what you do so I will have to send any projects to a gunsmith.
But that’s fine.

So now back to the hunt for a Rook rifle! Not many around here in Sweden and I might actually start with a Sauer Tell Kipplauf but Rook’s are more elegant so we’ll see?

Cheers!

So next instalment of this journey. Did a ladder pressure test witH N110 Powder and Viht data. Started getting pressure signs at around 2650 fps so backed off to just under 2600 fps and loaded up five rounds

About 50 odd yards, leaning against a tree with open sights, with a tiny little bead front sight that I can hardly see - its clear if I hold it like a pistol at arms length. I did try the next step up, but groups (or my shooting) blowing open.

I do need to make a bigger bead for the front sight, and a tang rear sight may help. And I do have a couple of litte vintage scopes that would work. I will file up some V blocks to fit, the barrel does have a flat top surface, but is tapered so a bit of measurement and maths is required to get a correct taper.

But a bigger bead is the first port of call.

As to bullets, I have some little 40gr Tipless Fox Bullets on order to try. They should work. Alternatively Barnes make a little 35grain Varmint Grenade. I have heard good things about them, but reading the literature I think they may be a bit destructive on Hares. I would prefer a bullet that stays in one piece so that end result is edible.

I'd love to know how you get on with it. I love my 3030 but can't find any off the shelf ammunition in copper.
I think I'm going to have to end up reloading myself
More stuff to spend my pennies on.....

They were not very good.
I ended up with 20 loaded rounds out of 50 shots trying to find a load.
The 20 loaded are not confidence inspiring. I would not use them past 100 yards but I guess I can show willing with them.....bloody nonsense.

That is exactly what I’ve had done on one of mine - I didn’t have the time or nerve to do it myself so I got that nice Mr McKillop to make the dovetail for me & to drill & tap the barrel. I have sourced a nice little Zielklien scope in an AKAH quick detach mount that had the original dovetail with it so he was able to copy that as a starting point. The new dovetail was screwed to the barrel parallel to the top surface & I shot it with the scope attached to determine point of impact compared to point of aim then a bit of basic trig to work out the angle the dovetail needed machining to in order to get POI & POA to converge. When all finished the rail was fitted using a pair of 5BA screws so the whole set up was just as it would have been had the scope been fitted 100 years ago when it was new & the rifle would have been 30 or so years old 😎
