Recessing brackets on shields?

I've never dealt with shields before I'm just wondering if its sensible to try remove some wood recess this bracket so Its inside the shield? at the moment It wobbles pretty bad enough that I cant trust it being on the wall since the bracket extends it out by about half a cm The deer Is a early Velvet roe (February) I cant afford the deer to drop in any way as Its not the skull that would go, It would be the antlers that would break considering the tips already wanted to break when boiling it last month (dried solid now, at least but still I cant imagine impact would be nice for it!)

The screw attaching the skull I recessed after this photo as it was simple enough, just hack at it with a regular-ol screwdriver then screw it back in.

If you have a router make a 4-5mm rebate
Needn't be super accurate in shape a square is fine

With a buddy holding it you should be able to manage that without risking the head

If not then if you fancy trying with chisels but you.mihjt want to remove the mount

Or just stick a bracer on both sides so it doesn't wobble

Yeah the head comes off no bother, once my fathers this weekend back I'll ask where the chisel went off too during home renovations.

No way would I hold it while someone is using a router especially a DIYer.

You could just drill a recess with a Forstner bit

I use an ordinary 1/4 inch wood drill bit to drill in the back at an angle towards the top of the shield, go in about just less than 1/4 inch then put a staple across the top. I'll put a picture up tomorrow. Ordinary round top screws in the wall and the head goes into the back of the shield and rests against the staple. Like that the shield sits flat against the wall.

Here's the best I can do. Using a round headed screw in the wall will enable the head to tuck in behind the staple which will rest against the shank of the screw

I use a forstner bit on a pillar drill to recess mine. Mark the outline of it then centrepunch the middle of the mounting screws & the wall mounting screw. Drill a clover-leaf pattern with a 20mm Forstner bit into each of the punched holes (a depth stop helps here…) then tidy up the edges with a chisel. Go slightly deeper with a 10mm Forstner bit on the mounting screw hole to give clearance when hanging it.
