hi all reloading for my 7mm rem mag with hogdon h4831sc and 162a max can you give me information on starting and max loads for this powder from your reloading manuals as information from the web is poor i have the lee manual your help very much apriciated

Although H4831 is no one of the best powders for the 7m Rem mag. The 7th manual says
53.7gr = 2600fps, 56.7gr = 2700fps, max load is 59.7gr = 2800fps, you could push up to 3000fps if you wanted to.

hi bud this is the problem im having on steves page its 66g max in another book its 65g starting load and yours is 59.7g max yes i would like to get as close to 3000fps as my h1000 powder has run out i was using 70g for 2960fps with the 162a max triying to get close or better with the h4831sc but all the load data is mixed up i know they have down loaded the 7mm but data is all over the place just looking for a safe load thanks rob

Hodgdon themselves have 64gr as the maximum with a 162gr bullet & this gave 2,870 out of a 24" barrel.

I use 64 grains of H4831 with a 162 A-max in my 7RM. It's been a good performer in two rifles - a factory SPS SS and now a Stiller Predator with a Sassen barrel.

Kind regards,

Tim

hi tim at 64g was there eney presure or can you push faster im using a remington police 7mm with a very long throat and have found no presure sighnes with being over book max in my gun using other powders i have used h4831sc with lighter rounds and is very acurate from my gun just never used the 162a max with this powder as i have 2tubs left may as well use it up

You could probably run it hotter but I gave up chasing every inch of velocity a long time ago. At 64, it’s a good load that does what I need it to do. Interestingly, the on line data and that printed on the tub label differs by 4 grains.

Kind regards,

Tim

You will not achieve 3000 fps safely with H4831. The LEE 2nd Ed. manual uses Hodgdon published data & reprints Vihtavuouri, Lapua, and IMR. LEE does no testing of its’ own, and as most of the loads date from 2003 these are bound to differ from what’s on the web.

The maximum in the Speer #13 (& #14) is 62.0grs @ 2853 fps - which will be right. I don’t know why 3K should be such a magic number for you, but Speer say that only one powder tested made that … 70.0grs Reloder 25 @ 3012 fps.

I have used the slower IMR 7828 at 66.0*grs for 2900 fps with the Speer 160gr BTSP, but that gave blown patterns. I’ve throttled that back for a more accurate & shootable load.

Dupont Industries developed IMR-7828 specifically for the 7mm Rem Magnum prior to its introduction at Remington's request, and there is still no better suited single-based powder for the cartridge available today.

Those propellants that give significantly (or even any) MV increases over 7828 are either double-based types or involve 'high-energy' technology (infused nitroglycerin) with the various pitfalls that 'hot' versions of this type entail.

A final thought for the OP - you do know that the two 4831s (and 7828 for that matter) are Reach non compliant, so there won't be any more coming into the country? If you want a good H4831 load, you'll need to have enough on hand now to do load development then all expected subsequent use of the rifle.

The new Reach compliant IMR-4955 should be with us within 2018 which is very close to the 4831s and we already have IMR-7977.

According to Hodgdon data, IMR-4955 usually outperforms H4831 (in MV terms) by a small margin for 160, 162 and 175gn bullets, but lags behind maximum 7828 loads by around 20 fps. However, IMR-7977 beats the lot of them for velocities giving 162 fps higher MVs than H4831 with the 175gn Nosler Partition.

For the 162gn Hornady SPBT as an example, maximum loads are:

64.0gn H4831 ............... 2,871 fps
65.0gn IMR-7828 ........... 2,882 fps
64.2gn IMR-4955 .......... 2,863 fps
69.5gn (C) IMR-7977 ..... 2,955 fps

Winchester case / Win WLRM magnum primer / 3.290" COAL / 24-inch barrel

Its a pity my Quickload doesn't have the new IMR 7977 listed - I must find out how to update the powder list!

What cartridge do you want to load it for? I have seen it on Hodgdon's site in various loading data. If they cover your cartridge then they already did the hard part. Or are you just curious?~Muir

thanks lads may have to change powder 3000fps with a 162a max is a good number to run with for 1000yard work no point in running a magnum at 270 speed naithan foster recomends this load and speed for the 7mm rem mag and that guy knows more than me on the 7mm rem mag il just have to see what the h8431sc gives in my gun with a 26in barrel i may get closer to 3000fps
