so sunday just gone we had a range day and for once i managed to make it since it didn't clash with having my daughter but i arrived a little late due to dropping her off first.
So i missed the 100m start and jumped in at 200m , now since the stupid 6.5 ban on military ranges has stopped me using my creedmoor go to stalker i grabbed my faithful old 308 which has seen many forms over the decades but currently is in a mcmillan A5 and wears a 22" fluted 1-10" bartlein barrel , this rifle has accounted for thousands of deer over the years and was even used for PRS in the early days before the full race guns we see now became popular. So anyway i dialled my 200m drop from memory (i only ever used 168gr TAP ammo in this rifle) and wacked a 3 shot group in at 200m no warm ups no sighters nothing , we then dressed back to 300m and i did the same again , dialled from memory and wacked a 3 shot group in.
upon getting down the butts to check targets i had a 3 shot cold bore group of about 3/4" about 3/4'' right of centre and the 300m target had a 1.5'' group about 1'' right of centre (upon investigation i had 0.1 MIL dialled on my windage which is a schoolboy error!) but every single shot would have been the end for bambi !
all this with a gun i have not handled let alone used for at least two years in an unfashionable calibre and based on the dreadful (apparently) rem700 action built by the equally dreadful (apparently) riflecraft !
as i say , that rifle is an old friend..........
