Found myself walking around Edinburgh a few months ago with a few hours to kill whilst waiting for a train back north. Having visited Edinburgh Rifles I walked back into the city and decided to nip into Nordic Outdoor on Bruntsfield for a browse as I had not been in before and wanted to avoid some of the rain.
As someone who has a lot of outdoor gear nothing really caught my eye so I asked the lady behind the counter if they had any gaiters. She was very helpful and showed me a pair of these:
Singi Gaiters Unisex
After a quick inspection they seemed to be well made and had all the essential features (center zip opening with velcro and press stud closures, strong hypalon straps secured with a brass buckle and top bungee draw for tightening). Another interesting point is the G-1000 material they use which is quite like waxed canvas but better.
At 70 pounds they were not cheap but I decided to give them a go, and the lady threw in some of the wax that you are supposed to treat them with which was very kind of her. Having used a generous amount of wax on the first application I have not treated them since.
Unlike most gaiters which claim to be water 'proof' through goretex or some other material these simply resist water and offer some protection at the calf area. Having previously used a pair of Harkila gaiters which occasionally worked loose and were often wetter inside than out due to the lack of ventilation, I have found these to be a great.
As they are offered in two sizes (tried both in the shop) I settled for the S/M size as for someone who is slightly over 6 ft they come up to the correct height when worn with stalking boots, long socks, garters and +4's (just below the knee, where you fold the tweeds over). The larger size came up to and slightly over my knees.
Having used them for a few months now I can thoroughly recommend these as they are suitable for outdoor work such as path and culvert repair, they are very hard wearing and ideal for stalking. Well worth the money!
