Rifle recommendation in .270

My old .270 is a Sako (Forester? I know not and care little). I bought it 2nd hand about 20 years ago. I've shot hundreds of deer and a few other things with it over the years and it still does exactly what it's meant to. It's accurate and comfortable to use. Many makes will offer quality and longevity, but between this rifle and the fact that my Sako .22LR is probably nearly as old as me and still the sweetest .22 I have ever handled I'd say you could go a long long way to find a make of rifle likely to last longer.

BTW... Congratulations on choosing the 'correct' calibre ;) :stir:

The Finbar if i remember correctly? the forrester was the 308 class and the vixen the 222 / 223 class . Action to fit the cartridge something more makers should do imo

Do you bother with a moderator on a .270?
I use one on mine but my .270 has a 21 inch barrel and gives me a bit of a wallop without one. Moderator just about let's me see the reaction to the shot through the scope. I imagine if I had a traditional 24 inch barrel then I imagine I'd probably get away without one.

If the OP wants real "old school" then a good condition Holland & Holland "Shot and Regulated" SAKO will please. If he wants modern then a SAUER fantastic plastic is the way ahead. If cheap and cheerful then gunshops are awash with BSA and Parker Hale .270 rifles. Try McLeod of Tain or the folks at McAvoy in Lancashire. I shot my first deer back in 1989 on the hill in Scotland with a Churchill .270 I owned with its sidemounted Pecar 4x81 'scope and Winchester Silvertips.

IMG_0967.webpMine was a bargain at £100 too, a token payment to a landowner losing his sight and wanting it to stay with somebody who’d use it. Tikkakoski LSA-65, made in Finland sometime in the late 60s/early 70s.
I’m yet to tell him that I’ve had it screwcut for a mod or put a scope more powerful than 4x on it, as I’m sure he’d then class me as the Antichrist.

I've got a Remington 700 in .270 but I do really fancy a Parker Hale. Maybe it's time to think about a second deer calibre...

Yes, especially if you are shooting near houses, or don't like the notion of tinnitus in 30 years time, or don't want to part with more money than your rifles for hearing aids later in life.
Big Atec on mine, dropped a Roe last week less than 100 yards from a gamekeeper (who was with me), without the gamekeeper realising a shot had been fired. Mind you, the gamekeeper is not a spring chicken and did not believe in moderators.
Look after your health. It is a gift you receive just once.

I usually wear hearing protection aswell, but you've convinced me on a moderator

For that money I’d be after a second hand Schultz & Larsen, but an older Sako would fit the spec for half the price. My Sako AV/L61R was £600 including a Zeiss scope and rings (so basically a free rifle), lovely solid classy rifle that’s doing the job well in all weather.
Same as that sako L61R
I’ve had to tactfully modernise it as it was a handful but £700 for a cabinet queen
