Whether you're a Lemmy fan or a Bowie fan, the passing of people that are iconic in your lifetime is worrying. Generally I suppose those whom we idolise as we grow into manhood are perhaps 10 years older than ourselves and as time progresses, we see them fall away and it serves to remind us of our own mortality.
I liked Bowie and his music, although not all of it, but he was that different throughout his career that you couldn't like it all. But he was certainly an innovator. I heard on the radio that he was considered one of the all time music superstars, the only two others being Frank Sinatra and Elvis. Personally I think there were a few more than that. But his contribution to music will stand the test of time for sure.
It saddens me that we don't seem to have such people in the music industry now. I would find it very hard to name any current "stars" that either would be as successful, or would take music in such a different direction. Maybe that's the legacy of today's manufactured stars, or maybe it's just that the 60's and 70's were just an explosion all on their own, music-wise.
RIP David Bowie.
