Roe rut 2014

With all the reports of early rutting activity, I was starting to get a little worried as the month wore on clients were not arriving until the evening of the 31st July and it looked like they might miss it.

Well we picked up a buck the first evening, and one on the morning of of the first and again one in the evening, Saturday
was torrential rain all day and a non event as far as stalking was concerned, Sunday the fourth of August was warm but with showers, but BANG! the rut was in full swing far from being over it was just picking up, with rutting activity to be seen everywhere accounted for thirteen Bucks up until clients left on Monday morning, rut still in full swing but I have my cull number, so that's it until I start the Does

Despite of all the reports of early rutting with me it started proper a few days later than normal and peaked at the usual time (the first week in August)

Still very stop/start with some flat oot and others no interest.
Got this very old fella after 3 years of seeing him and he was a very poor shape.Quite old and a shadow of what he used to be.

Anyone seeing ongoing signs in north Yorkshire? I'm up that way at the weekend and was hoping there'd be an outside chance of still bumping into a buck.

Was calling last night for an hour or two with no reaction from the two bucks I saw. Managed to stalk into one all the same. This was near Banbury.

Stop start here in NNE Lancs & South Cumbria. Two weeks ago it was fully on, colder weather seems to have slowed it down. I called in one young buck on his own on Tuesday night but then all quiet where I knew two or three bucks are hanging around (does.)

What a cracking buck to shoot, a right old warrior, doubt you would have seen him next year the condition he's in.

How old do you reckon he is, really white face, can you put up some pics of his teeth and keeps us posted on what he weighs and scores as sure he'll be good medal?

Saw a lot of activity this year, for the last three weeks, thought it was winding down as there was early activity, but shot a buck last night chasing a doe.

Out over the last couple of days and its well and truly over in my part of West Dorset. Although I had a busy week last week I got out a few times but never really saw it get going with any intensity. This tallies with other local reports. Saw them chasing but they were not really that interested in the the call or any call that I had with me! Persuaded one mature buck to come in on one occasion when the rut was arguably at its peak but all in all a pretty rubbish year. Might put the video on youtube. The woods are as dead as a door nail now but hopefully I will catch up with a few bucks over the next week or two.

It was still going in the New Forest over the last few days.

Plenty of evening activity just over my boundary, bucks chasing each other and the does but nothing came to the call.

Following morning I was out early and shot a four pointer, not a yearling but likely two or three years old. This was just at first light.

I waited a couple of hours and saw deer moving and coming out to feed. A buck came across the neighbouring field so I gave him a call with the buttalo. Stopped and looked at the plaintive squeak but moved on. I gave it a bit more with the call and squeezed it to give the squeak ending with the 'quack' noise.
He came charging across the field like a steam train, came through the hedge and I dropped him, a reasonable six pointer.

I went to retrieve him and while I was dragging him, I had a phone call from a mate to see how I got on. While on the phone, another buck came across the next field so I stopped and gave him a call. He too came charging in but as I was exposed, not really expecting him I wasn't ready for another shot. He was a little wiser than the previous fella and stopped the other side of the hedge. He clocked me and ran off.

Hope to go back next week and see if there is still some action.

All ive had respond to the call is a badger, sparrowhawk and a few rabbits coming to see what the noise was !

Hopefully they'll make it for a few more seasons without being poached which is a distinct possibility around here at the moment! The roe are still hard at it here. I saw a buck chasing at 0630 and another one chasing at 0800 in the pouring rain yesterday morning. Both too good to cull.
