Roe Rut 2023

Out last night in Aberdeenshire and the same as lochty saw one doe and no interest in a call
I tried the call for the first time (Aberdeenshire) and only a doe came in.

Still seeing plenty does without bucks in tow. Shot one buck that was with a doe but was just mooching about behind her not showing much interest.

I think it will hit properly with us in about 5-7 days going by previous years.

Friends thermal Is in the shop for now so given how high the grasses and everything is at the moment we probably wont be out for a another few days at least.

Given at me being not hugely familiar with shooting at deer in general I would presume we'll spot one, get the sticks set up and lure them over with some calling, so later into the rut the better lmo.

Too be fair both my stags were shot within seconds but still there was a dozen or so animals before that, that I missed out on!

Out this morning no real rutting Bucks close to Does in Glasgow should start soon normally the very end of July here. eight does seen with 4 bucks close to the larger Does

Thermal will be gone for three weeks but out this weekend too see it for myself.

Couple of bucks with does here in south Hampshire last night but no chasing or response to calls. Cold and wet today too, but still a week early based on previous years

Took a 6 pointer Thursday night in Gloucestershire, came into the call nicely as did a doe with twins and a fallow buck.

I was out again last night and although no Roe bucks were seen or responded to the call I did have some decent responses from Roe Does.

I managed to get some footage on my phone but can’t post it here.

If you’re on Instagram you can view it there @theroedeerguy

Using a Clausen RoeDeerCall Pro which I’m really impressed with.

Seemed very iffy had a four point run right into the call out of no where into 20 yards, then had another buck run from the call.

Buck holding a doe couldn't give two *****

Last field last light I had a little 6pt run directly in not an ideal shot but the way it worked out it was dead in an instant.

All around though I had five bucks in like three hours of walking around, the weather was actually terrible incredibly lucky too see as much as we did.

North Somerset and Wilts: was out on Thursday night and Friday night. Only does seen and no response to calling at all. Yet to kick off IMHO despite the humidity and fair temperature. Going out again tonight in Wilts 🤞

Out Saturday afternoon in Castle-milk and the rut is on here. Doe standing for a large buck and a further large buck holding off some 60 yards. One more small buck lying at a fence line about 200 mtr away. Had the spangle out instead of my new pup and she did a great job of finding a dead buck in the heavy cover. Weather was warm and stick with very light rain.

Out yesterday morning must have seen 12 bucks moving about around does but none covering any .
Last night weather was good . But very quite compared to the morning .
Today a different proposition all together very cold and windy seen virtually none for 5 hours out .

When it comes to the really big heads I've been lucky to stalk over thousands of acres in some of the best areas in the country and most of the golds have come from the same very small areas again and again. One friend of mine had the stalking on a thousand acre farm and it became a running joke that the biggest buck would always turn up on a small 5 arce piece of grass. And when it comes to soil type I was always a very strong believer that the best heads come from chalk downland but then I picked up a small farm on very heavy wet clay ground and it has produced some monsters right up into the 160 to 170 bracket.
The Yorkshire and Lincolnshire Wolds are chalk down land and neither are known for being particularly productive medal wise.

And it’s still not kicked off  Ten roe does seen and 2 travelling mature bucks - one holding a doe but not chasing. Indeed, very quiet out there and then the rain started again and it was time to go home with the poorer mature buck in the deer box in the back😃
