Fallow bucks have been photographed swimming to islands on my local lough. One of the islands was made famous by WB Yeats so I suppose if good enough for a Nobel prize winner, good enough for a hungry fallow buck!
I believe (although a local might tell me otherwise) that the original sika deer in Dorset were released onto brownsea island near Poole but they all swam across the harbour and into the surrounding countryside!
Yes, that is how they got here to sunny Dorset..once into the heath and woodland they were gone! Poole RNLI get frantic calls every year from worried holidaymakers when they see one of the local sika having a quick dip or popping across to Poole for a night out with his mates
This reminds me of the classic crofting culling tactic - push deer off on island so they swim to another island, then someone else motors up to the deer and picks them off with a 22.
