Rough shooting

two good friends, two good dogs, nowt seen all morning other than fresh air and exercise. The two phaesants and wood cock didn’t show up. Then in the afternoon lets try one more spot.

A snipe popped up and away too quick. Five minutes later hounds put up another one - shot at it, missed but the ground erupted with snipe, heading away and and the sweet sixteen did its job without thinking about it - one in the bag.

A couple more chances for each of us. Happy day - well exercised and lots of fresh air.

Size of bag really has nothing to do with satisfaction of the day, and I am really liking my new to me 16 pre war Webley & Scott. We are learning to shoot together!!

I read a phrase many years ago that has stuck in my brain - it's not what you go out to get but what you get out of going out! :)

Beautiful morning today. Just the two oul fellas out for an armed walk on the frozen cornflakes that were once grass.
First surprise was finding the very frozen corpse of the fox we three-barrelled last Tuesday but couldn’t find.

Then knocking a fat squirrel out of the tree with the 20 bore - good job, at least some feeders will still have wheat in them.
Half an hour later a screamer of a hen pheasant and a crossing pigeon - on report, both dead in the air - don’t you just love the twenty?
On the way back to the Jimny a raiding crow on a feeder fell to the second barrel after a particularly poor attempt to fell a large tree with the first barrel; followed 10 minutes by a high driven jackdaw which took forever to crash to earth.
The finale was checking zero on the 6.5x55SE and then home.
A cracking morning and much damage evident caused by our 30 hours storm Darragh.
Just another day in paradise…..

The other very personal highlight was letting Rua, our new lab, have her first cold pheasant retrieve in the back garden - a joy to behold; she was so very pleased with herself - about half as much as I was….

Was out Monday as someone's guest on a farm shoot walkabout,6 of us with 5 dogs. Ended with 22 pheasants,1 jay, 1 crow and 2 wood pigeon. Thoroughly enjoyed the day out with mates and the complete lack of pressure to get on and make the numbers.
Last week loaded at double gun day for the boss, excellent day superbly run. The polar opposite on Monday, reminds me of being a youngster when my brothers and I would "borrow" dad's guns and go for a wander. Although I'm employed to put on days for others, my personal favourite is the walkabout, even if it turns into an armed nature ramble sometimes.

Nickb , can I ask , does the border work for you as a rough shooting and stalking partner? I’m looking at a new terrier in a year or two and would like to down size to one dog after the GWP retires and have always fancied a border.

To be honest I've never taken him stalking but I'm sure you could train one if you wished.
