This is how was taught to use ironsI don't try and focus the lot. I was taught to line the front and rear, hold the head position and focus the front under the target.

That's the thing, let the sight float around, eventually it will pause. Then it's just a twitch of the trigger finger.I used to do an informal 50yd offhand practice target which was 10 shots a week with a rimfire rifle. It really showed me up when I first starting doing it but you get to understand a moving crosshair and timing rather than relying on stability. It helped increase confidence no end and the improvement was noticable and quick.
These days I don't practice as such but I do a fair amount of air gun shooting around the yard and that is mostly offhand with a spring rifle which helps massively.
Does it count if you use a red dot sight? Roy Lupton has one to shoot his rifle canted, as seen on Fieldsports Britain. That's the thing, let the sight float around, eventually it will pause. Then it's just a twitch of the trigger finger.
It does get better and better the more you do.
Yes, you can not beat a simple airgun or pistol for cheap practice.
Count? No rules mate, just offhand.Does it count if you use a red dot sight? Roy Lupton has one to shoot his rifle canted, as seen on Fieldsports Britain.
I thought about it for my short barrelled woodland .308, but as quick to wind my scope back to 1.5 and shoot - maybe…
Totally! When granted my FAC in 1995 the expectation was rifle shots were either off-hand or on a monopod at best. After a sizeable interregnum when I returned to stalking in 2014 I found my monopod to be so last season and quickly progressed through Primos twin and then tripod rests, before being introduced to my first set of Viperflex quads. Since then, 90-off percent of my stalking shots are off quads and frankly, I don't have the skill offhand period! Its a few years since I last shot one so exact details are a bit hazy, but the German Jagdschein shooting test - which you must pass every year, or if you are visiting- is a series of about 10 shots of which 3 are from a seated high seat type position at 100, the rest are all unsupported offhand either at a moving target or stationary running boar target at 50m.
To pass all rounds need to go into the sideplate sized kill zone.
I am all for shooting aids, but I can’t help feeling that quad sticks etc really decay basic shooting skills.
In the late 80’s and 90’s we used to shoot lots of rabbits with air rifles or a 22rf all off hand.
