Rust on muzzle thread

I have some rust on the muzzle thread of my sako 85, what is the best way to clean the rust without damaging the threads. Cheers Jack

Just make sure you always remove the moderator and give the barrel a quick wipe with an oily cloth - including the threads!

Bronze wire brush as you would use bronze round one to do the bore when cleaning.
Wire wool is steel.
Wire wool (+ oil) is fine to use for removing surface (ie, external) rust on a gun barrel, provided that it's not a stainless steel barrel. I didn't think to check what the OP's barrel was made of.

Engineers check the spec of the job.
The spec is
muzzle thread of my sako 85

If the barrel is stainless, then you will be fine using either a stainless steel or bronze wire brush, but whatever you do, don't use a carbon steel brush or wire wool on it. If it's a carbon steel barrel then it doesn't matter.

I have hand dies for different muzzle threads and if the threads feel uneasy in run the die down without putting it in a holder so that it’s not tight and doesn’t remove any metal.
Kb.
Ps. Same with moderator threads but use appropriate tap.
PPs. Neither are expensive to buy.

Then when you have cleaned it up I took the tip from someone on here and I put Copper Slip on the threads, keeps them rust free and stops the Bod binding on

I'd be more worried what is going on in the crown myself.
I've taken to a wee squirt of WD-40 in the can directed at the muzzle after a cold night. I then store muzzle down.
Seems to be working.

All I use pre barrel clean nylon toothbrush and gun oil thrash that around the crown/thread, careful clean of the threads, clean the rifle, clean and oil thread after that

4 of my rifles have the more 18:1 chunkier thread where the others 15:1 are a lot less work to keep clean, I’ve found that say over the stay of 4 days stalking the 18:1 thread does stiffen up on remove or install on the moderator side of the thread, thats always worth a scrape off each time, they may take on more powder residue
