Sako stocks breaking down

Not sure if anyone has had the same problem as myself, but very disappointing when you buy a good brand and they don’t stick by their customers.
I have now sold two of my sako rifles before they get in the same mess as my last sako which I have had to scrub the melting sticky rubber off, to be able to use it.
It will have lost all value now.
So any one on here with sako synthetic stocks keep an eye on them.
I’ve got 2 Sako 85’s stainless synthetic, the older one which doesn’t have the rubberised soft touch is well used and fine, the newer soft touch stock was removed and replaced with a custom stock and the synthetic put on the shelf unused, 5 years later I took it off the shelf to reuse is and it had gone sticky. I’ve scraped it off and sprayed it with Pro-tex bumper paint, it’s now like new but without the soft touch.

Perhaps it is ozone in the atmosphere that is attacking the rubber content of the soft touch. There is a fortune to be made by developing a non rotting/softening soft touch mix.

That sounds interesting, could you put up a few photos of your hard work.

It’s the 85 synthetic (soft touch) that has the problem the material they use to give it the soft touch tends to break down after a few years.

If you want to keep the rifles look at restocking with a better stick to preserve its value.

Good man you, that looks a great job. Didn’t know they had an adjustable cheek rest.
Nice setup
It doesn’t have an adjustable cheek rest. I made it from a piece of black plastic painted with the same bumper paint and stuck on with Velcro which allows me to remove it for cleaning. Got them on all my rifles!

i have just stripped back my stock and was debating whether to finish it or not. does the Pro-Tex leave a smooth or rough texture?

That’s brilliant
I had all sako rifles till they started to break down. I keep one out of the 3. Will have to have ago at this.
Do you know the brand or type of paint used? What kind of pipe used?
Thanks very much for the photos

I used Pro Tex bumper paint as previously mentioned, The cheek riser is a piece of 25mm solid polyurethane but any plastic or wood will do, this was what was lying about in my garage, I filed a groove in one side with a round rasp and filed a radius on the top side, sprayed with bumper paint the same as the stock. You will need to establish the height of your riser first, my risers all give the same height from the centre of the scope, the Velcro is self adhesive.

Thanks for all the information,
It will be something for me to do as off after operation.
I take it that you use a 6.5x55
That’s the same as the one I have to do.
it’s for my lads to use when I take them out.
I have gone mad and bought a blaser 270 thumb hole.
After a clear out and trade in of all the other sako’s.
What do you usually stalk, sika, red, roe or fallow.
If I not to noisy

All my rifles are Sako, 6.5x55 is my preferred calibre and I have 2, I use one for non toxic and the other for my home loads. I’ve stalked all 6 species, my favourite are the Roe.
