thats down to the rifle/ammunition not the scope
i was a non believer in high end glass
i had a mid range scope that i thought was pretty good,until i looked through a m8s ziess and minox,worst/and best mistake ive made
the difference in clarity is outstanding being able to see individual blades of grass at 700 yards ,i have sold the scope and on advice from a lot of others i'm buying a sightron next week.below 100 yards i suppose you don’t really need high end glass to shoot a dear.
but if you want to head shoot rabbits at 300 yards or shoot crows at 450+ect you need decent glass

They are mate. I own a vxr just now and I love it. Ive owned a Meopta before and to be honest I prefered the Meopta but thats only down to the rticle thickness the vxr is illuminated and the Meopta wasnt. Ive also had a VXL and it was the mutts nuts, I actual punted a swaro to buy it as i felt due to the cresent shaped objective the cheek weld was something to believe. And I probably shot more deer later in the day with the VXL than the swaro. If finance had allowed I would have got the new vx-3l just because I like how low on the rifle they sit. But Ive saved money as the lower priced Leupold is just as clear, Ive popped a cheek pad on to raise the comb instead sorted.
Mungo I honestly feel your spot on with your thoughts. When I 1st started and owned my parker hale 308 I had Deerfiled on it which I got for £80. The total cost for that rifle, scope and mounts set up was £200.

but that is my point
the records do not correlate with advances in technology...either glass or powders/bullets
some of the BR records are 40 years old!
the 1000yd group record is still 10 yrs old.
Time you checked the net for the record at 1000 yards I recon. You are 8-9 years out of date. Around 5" the last time I looked for 10 shots I think it was. Its on 6mm BR site. British record isin't too far off that as well.
Always the same arguments about cheapo and decent price scopes people with cheapos claiming they are better than the expensive ones. Get real it just doesn't happen and I don't care if its for your eyes blah blah blah. Some peoples eyes are so good its a wonder they need a scope at all.
People who don't spend money on scopes seem to want to justify their reason to others for buying a cheap scope. Makes no difference to me as stated earlier it's your choice
The comment about shooting in the last 15 20 minutes of light about judging range and missing. You are looking at 100 yds tops probably a great deal less because you are sitting waiting for them to appear and if you do your bit right and proper they will be close very close so that in my opinion doesn't come into it.
Funny the same named scopes come out on top every time as being the best. They don't need to justify their price, people but them cause they are the best.
I have S&B, Habicht and an IOR. I rate the IOR as one of the best scopes I have ever bought and they are half the price of the top 3

I wouldn't say cheap scopes are better but there is some wild story telling going on about how much more effective they are.
I have been shooting 25 years and I am sure there are those who have been shooting longer on here.
Twenty five years ago I had less money than I have today, my scopes were niko sterling with 40mm objectives. I shot countless deer, foxes and rabbits with a cheap scope.
Its just that if you listen to some if the hype in here you might aswell not bother leaving your house unless you have a 2k scope on your rifle.

nope. same guy, same year, several others close to 10 years.
If you look at the shorter distances some of them are much older.
If scope technology, bullets and powder advances ALL these records set would be within the last 5 years
and at least half of these were set with $1000 Leupolds
I am not denying they are great scopes, but the arguement that you need a Z6 x30 Swaro to shoot well at 1000yds is flawed, most army snipers shooting .50BMG at significantly longer ranges are using 10x40 something fixed S&B's!

Oh, I don't need a bad scope to miss. Can do that perfectly well in broad daylight with scopes of any quality. Nothing if not consistent...

I wonder what a plot best score against time would lool like. My guess is that things are at, or are approaching, a maximum that can be achieived with this sort of technology. Ie. propelling a little lump of lead down a 3 foot metal tube using a semi-controlled explosion, and then sending it a km across open air. There is going to be an absolute limit to how consistent shots can be, regardless of how sophisticated the glass on top gets. There comes a point where further accuracy can only be achieved if the projectile is capable of self correction.

the extra money on decent glass buys you extra time at dusk and reliability when dialling in long shots
i am no expert but a schmidt 8x56 is as good a scope as you will ever need in my opinion. the clarity is exceptional, excelent in low light and at £519 new from winkies in tain great value for money. i would love an all singing and dancing swaro bt but like most, simply cant justify spending over months wages on 1.
Call me old-fashioned, but any shot where I have to telephone ahead is too far for me.

I had a Leupold VX3 that I used for park culling great for daylight shots but you may of well been looking through a rolled up news paper at dawn and dusk.

Got to be honest, with a st/synth heavy barrel t3 varmint and 4.5-30x50 elite, you'd need more than the best glass on top of your smokepole to shame what my baby does with me and a mag of my favourite 150gr SST's reloads.
That said, spending 2k more than my Elite cost me to get an extra minute of light on darkening is worth it if you're happy

Nope Engineers using the 50 are using 3-12 x 50's and the snipers are using 5-25 x 56 S&B's

I think that is about the bottom line - some people must have the best in which case, based on my experience, they need to be looking at Nickel. Others are attracted by advertising offering "must have" features that they might never or only rarely use. Others are happy to have something that is adequate for their job even if it may not be "the best" or have the latest whizz-bang feature or the best magazine advert.
These are choices we all have and it is a good thing that we have them. I use a second hand S&B 8X56 on the basis that to date I've always decided it was too dark to shoot before it became too dark to use the scope to get a shot. It is certainly not the best I've looked through, again that goes to Nickel, and I've never seen a magazine advert for one. It doesn't have much in the way of features. However, it is adequate for my purposes and so I'm happy with it. I am also happy with people choosing their scopes using slightly different reasoning to mine.

Last weekend a client of mine used my rifle, he took a 200m shot using my "Euro" scope in very bad light conditions. He is a very very experienced hunter and he said it was one of the best scopes he had ever used and was off to get one.
There is no way in hell I would have taken the shot using my Duralyt. There is good glass, very good glass and exceptional glass. You pay for what you get.
