I agree with what you say about scopes. A good 3-9x40 with AO can be used on anything from airgun and rimfire to .375 H&H. Setting your air rifle, .22, .243 and .308 at 6x would serve 95% of anyone's needs.

My point about iron sights is that they are very natural for shooting, easily becoming part of your vision, and helpful in determining range, even subconsciously.

I use iron sights when the situation suits, because I like shooting with iron sights, and it makes the rifle lighter and easier to carry. Since have worn glasses since my early 50s, I use scopes, too. I would not take a shot at a deer with iron sights at 300 yards, because I don't believe in taking a shot AT anything, and the fun is to get as close as I can. But 200 yards is a snap, as I regularly practice offhand at 100 to 200 meters. I have taken deer with at 300 yards with a .270 and a 2.5x scope and with a .30-06 and 4x scope.

When you get into shooting at the outer ranges (90+ yards for .22 LR, 350+ yards for centerfire ), range estimation and wind doping become so critical because of the bullet's loss of velocity, that you need more equipment, more time, more notes, and still may not make an ethical, clean kill, no matter how good you and your equipment are. Inside 300 yards, any decent 3-9x scope with a 200 yard zero will do the job all day long, because your point blank range is going to be 225 or so, and you never have to hold off hair.

Southern, on Friday I was looking at the open sights from my old US Gibbs Mauser in 270. Rear sight came loose in the dovetail and the guy who drilled holes in the action for mounts got that wrong. So I am thinking of getting the iron sights to work again and use her as a dirty weather gun when getting deer out of plantations. Iron sights work well in monsoon conditions, other than that I wouldn't have much use for them.

The original rear leaf sight had been lost from my 8x60s Type A Mauser, which is one reason I had bought it so cheaply. I filed down the dovetail of an NECG express sight so it would fit in the dovetail on the barrel boss, and tapped it until I had the windage zeroed. This blade has a wide V notch which is adjustable for elevation, locking with two screws. It is very sturdy, so no worries about brushing it with a limb. It is the same sight as on my Model 70 Express in .375 H&H - very quick and natural to line up the front bead. I have it zeroed for 150 yards.

Set your scope in Warne QR rings and you are all set to continue hunting with the rain or snow falling, or in thick cover where the woods are dark and the marks are close.

Check out the new Delta Titanium 2.5-15 x 56 HD. Re-settable low profile turrets, superb optics (on a par with Euro glass for sure). Tried one and bought it for one of my rifles and no regrets. Best VFM out there at the minute anyway. Top end performance, high-mid range scope. I've had no problems so far with holding zero and it tracks very well, but as above, mine is zeroed an inch high at 100 yds which is where it stays unless bashing gongs at long distance.

I have the Delta Titanium 3-24x56 with the 34mm tube and it's great. A lot of scope for the money!!
