Scots Midge or Yorkshire Midge?

West Highland midge is the midge that rules them all.
The worst I have ever had were in the Cairngorms whilst hillwalking. My wife actually lost her mind that day, running in circles squealing! Midges all the way from the car park to 3300ft. Warm, humid, no wind. Not a good day and it took a while for the bumps to go down.

Three things that science taught us about the midge.
1 they never fly above six to eight feet
2 They tend not to like yeasty skin
3 They are attracted to exhaled CO2

So one simple solution is to walk on stilts whilst eating marmite sandwiches and holding your breath.

Otherwise, get some Smidge or Lifesystems Midge Spray
If the current weather pattern remains you will be fine. The wee sods don't like anything more than a gentle breeze

So what’s the remedy for these little devils? 🦟 . The reason I ask is , I am going up to Perth a week Friday for a long weekend stalking 👍🏻
Cover yourself in lots of Deet and the highest strength permethrin you can buy online from abroad. If your plastic watchstrap and polyester clothing hasn’t melted away in five minutes it isn’t enough do it again. To be sure you’re using enough, all the fish and aquatic insects downstream of your local water treatment works need to be belly up after you’ve taken a shower.

Or watch Caorach’s excellent video.

Don’t bother with Skin So Soft, it’s sh!te for serious midge.

Unless you find old stock of skin so soft (pre noughties.)

As far as I can discover the "old" Skin So Soft contained some citronella as part of the perfume, basically it was in there by accident. It has some modest midge repelling effect but is extremely volatile and so this effect only lasts for a very short while. It is useful if you are faced with an especially challenging episode of Countryfile and Karen from Facebook is going to join you but she's worried if her kids might get bitten but pretty much sod all use for anything else in the real world.

If you are going to be faced with midges and there is a genuine chance they might ruin your day then get a chemical that was engineered to do the job rather than waving moisturising cream around in the hope that it might work, if you are going with that approach you'd be better just hitting them with the bottle.

Argyll, Cowal peninsula midges are vicious. Legend has it that FC staff used to get paid extra “midge time”

I have been told that the old way Scottish way of dealing with trouble makers, rapists etc was to tie them up naked for the midges. You would loose your mind very quickly.

And think very very very carefully before squeezing that trigger. Is there standing in a howling gale, or can it easily be dragged to where there is a howling gale.

If you think the midges are bad, just try starting a gralloch.

And then there are Scottish Cleggs. I would far rather be attacked by Tetse flies in Africa.

The only solution for midges is a full on midge suit. There is no protection for cleggs.

And its also why Scots leave the west coast to tourists in July and August to do the midge dance.
