Scout Rifle

Anyone use a scout rifle? I have ended up pretty fixated on the notion and like the idea of something fairly compact that can be quickly fired out of a truck window/used in woodland.

Anyone have any experience? Keen to hear of the inevitable limitations of them as well.

For a handy truck rifle you are looking at a barrel of 16"-20" max with a flush or near flush detachable magazine. No fancy scope required.
The Rugers were quite popular here in Australia, but they are not light and with the 10 round mag quite unwieldy. Really found their niche for shooting mobs of feral pigs - mounted with a red dot - where the whole object is killing as many as possible at every opportunity.
All forward mounted scopes have issues with glare in the sun and are pretty poor in low light.
For a truck/woods gun it is pretty hard to beat the lightest rifle you can find with the attributes above and fitted with a good old fixed 4x32 or 6x42 and a spare mag on the dash or in your pocket.

I owned a Steyr Scout for over a decade as my primary deer rifle and loved it.

I now use this Psuedo-Scout which is a Lee Enfield re-barelled to 308. Last used on a Sika hind just before the end of the season. It has been painted and cerakoted since this photo.

I did something similiar a number of years ago , there's a picture of it here somewhere . Mine was a bubbad No5 in the original 303 Brit , a cool little rifle . My nephew thought so too , and now he owns it . I saw one locally like yours , only rebarreled to 444 Marlin , quite the Moose thumper . I do like yours in 308 though , a very useful little rifle , nice .
