SD whisky drinkers

Love a wee dram or even a large one. Had lots of favourites. Haig Club on special at Asda is floating my boat at the minute 🥃

I had a one off bottle from a private cask , it was just an expensive "drinker", about 90 quid iirc , it was very good.Somehow a tad almost seaweedy and sweet if that makes sense
They some easy drinking and easily accessible cask strength whiskies.
The peaty one isn't too heavy, and their amarone cask is almost like "desert whisky"

Haven't tried their special releases like Valkyrie, but I've tried the 10 year old Viking Scars. It's very good, more dark fruity and peppery than the regular 12 year old, but TBH I prefer the original, which IMO is one of the best all-round malts there is that will appeal to most people. Tiny hint of peat, but not smokey or medicinal, balanced with a nice amount of fruit and spice without being overly sweet. And very smooth and clean.

Dangerous though because it's so easy to drink and doesn't give you much of a hangover.

Well ... what can I say 'Haig Club' ois a 'spirit drink' not a Whisky.
it's made in the same place as Tanquer-ay Gin, Cameronbridge. Which looks like a collection of old steel sheds in a field.
What is good about the plant is that they use some of the spirit/ethanol they make to fuel the boilers and generators so they are in effect carbon nuetral.

Personally I think Diagio should expand on this, adapt thier trucks and deliver this 'fuel' to their other distilleries to power their generators and heat the Mash Tun's.

Grain whisky. And David Beckham is joint owner of the company and is reputed to have designed it's blue bottles.

David Beckham has joined a new club – but not a football club this time. He has signed up to launch a new grain whisky, Haig Club, with music mogul and pal Simon Fuller.
Beckham and Fuller, who created Pop Idol and put The Spice Girls on the map, are to work with whisky distiller and Guinness owner Diageo to launch Haig Club Single Grain Scotch Whisky.

Beckham will lead the promotion of the brand and the pair have worked on developing its marketing strategy. The Scotch will be sold in packaging that looks like an after-shave bottle.
Beckham and Fuller were spotted visiting Diageo’s whisky making plants in Fife and Clackmannanshire in January when they were preparing their involvement.

Beckham said: "The House of Haig has a rich history and I’m proud to be working at the heart of a home-grown brand which has built an incredible heritage over 400 years. Working closely with Diageo, we look forward to collaborating on Haig Club, valuing and treasuring the Haig traditions while reinventing this whisky for years to come.”

Drinks giant Diageo, which also owns Johnnie Walker whisky, said Haig Club is the latest brand from Scotland’s oldest grain whisky dynasty – the House of Haig. The House of Haig’s blended whisky brands, Haig and Dimple, are currently sold in Latin America but Haig Club will be sold worldwide. David Gates, Diageo’s Global Head of Premium Core Spirits, commented: “Whisky is experiencing a continued global renaissance and like many of the world’s most respected whisky experts, we believe this will be the year that grain whisky breaks into the mainstream and gains the recognition it deserves.”

See they are calling Johnnie Walker a Whisky too ... anything made in a Coffeey still shouldn't really be called Whisky IMO :)

Well .... I went to Llandudno on the weekend and called into Penderyn Distillery/visitor center and shop.

It was interesting, the lady in the shop was quite attentive but really didn't know anything about whisky, 'Gin is my thing' she said, I didn't disagree.
Penderyn use the same system to produce the wash as scottish distillers, it's the still thats different.
They use a Column/reflux still (Faraday still) that produces a 90% ABV fresh make spirit .... which explains a lot.

The spirit is put in an old Bourbon barrel and then (in this case) an old Laphroig barrel. The lady was vague about the maturation process but did proudly tell me that their whisky was bottled @ 6 years old .... which explains a lot too.

Obviously it's watered down considerably and I think this happens before they put it in the barrel.
The bottle I bought (£95) is reportedly 'cask strength' @ 58.5% which means it's almost 1/3rd water and thier standards are circe 2/3rds water ....

Is it worth £95 .... No, £50 to £60 would be about right.
Was it straight out of a cask, No, it was in a barrel shaped poly pin.

Penderyn have bought some Pot Stills which will (I think) improve their whisky (it does need it).
Penderyn gets a bit fat ;'No' from me, if they were selling it as 'Whisky flavoured Gin or Vodka' then they would be more aligned with it's reality ...

Don't buy any at the Gretna Green Whisky shop. Went in there the other day out of curiosity as I was going past. It's a tourist honey pot so I knew it would be expensive. And how...

Johnnie Walker black label: on offer in Waitrose - £20. Gretna - £42
Ardbeg 10 year old: Waitrose - £46. Gretna - £74

Novice here.

I only have one bottle of whisky, The Belvenie Caribbean Cask. Bought it on sale one day as the blurb sounded like my kind of thing.

Not a fan of peaty/smokey ones even though I adore smoked food, dont like the taste in drinks. Only tried a couple, one was Laphroaig and it was vile (maybe thats not a good one?).

Anything in the £20 to £30 range that I should look out for thats like the Caribbean cask, kind of light and clean?
