second hand gun market

I am trying to sell my rifle, scope, mod, bipod etc in order to fund a 20 bore game shotgun. I just prefer game/walked up shooting. I still want to go stalking but i wont be doing it as much as i thought i would and 1) can borrow an estate rifle when i do go and 2) i no longer really have a valid reason for owning a firearm

I bought my kit last year from new - it's decent entry-level kit and paid ~1500gbp for sauer rifle, minox scope, mounts, mod and amazed how hard it is to find a dealer willing to take it for part-ex. looking at ~50% loss if i do go ahead (I dont have enough posts to list my kit in the classifieds and not trying to indirectly sell it here).

is it just time of year and prices should pick up towards winter?
is it covid?
what level of depreciation is reasonable after one year of ownership?

I have bought and sold a few shotguns and never really lost that much but I just would have thought i'd get slightly more interest

Bearing in mind you need to knock VAT off the retail price, and also that they would be getting them trade at a lot less than the price you paid, I would say for trade in that’s reasonable. Get it advertised on guntrader, and you are then in charge.... but be realistic in value..... you’ll never get close to recouping costs in that space of time.

thanks - i hadn't considered VAT.

I dont know if i am being realistic but i have listed on guntrader already

The other big factor with rifles is getting a grant or variation. Most Police forces have put a hold on variations during COVID so these are only just being released. So fundamentally the number of buyers who can actually buy your rifle is very much reduced. Even in normal times, getting a variation is a pain.

With a shotgun I can see something for sale, like it and buy it.

My advice, given that you have gone through the cost and rigmarole of getting your FAC and a Rifle, would just hang on to it. You only got it last year, and you never know when you will get the offer of stalking etc. Using an estate rifle is always a compromise. By selling now you will crystalise a £700 loss. Keep it and use it. You don't need to use it that often to justify having it - I suggest an awful lot of FAC holders use their rifle a couple or three times a year at most.

Get it listed on on Guntrader, Gunstar and Gunwatch via pigeon watch forum.
The market is going to shrink as licensing departments are not doing any new applications for firearms or shotgun and have not been from March so that discounts that side of the market.
That only leaves you open to current licence holder's who wish to change and get variation.
I think the market place will shrink by 50% this year as more redundancies will be announced this month throughout all sectors ( me included) which will lead to less disposable income.
If your going to take too much of a hit on the price it maybe wise to rethink your plans and leave the rifle in the cabinet for a year in the hope the market will recover.
Regarding a 20bore there's plenty out there for sale so it is a buyer's market. I had to discount my two last month to get them sold.

I have a friend who is an RFD and everyone is trying to sell to him at the moment. He took in 14 firearms last week and that doesn’t count the loads he wouldn’t buy. It’s a buyers market at the moment so good luck to you but I would personally hang on to it for a year.

Yes Corbin will have an effect. Many companies are cutting staff and what I am seeing are Headcount reductions around 20%. so to put it plainly. If you were unsure that you would have a job in 2 or 3 months, would you spend money on luxury expenses or hobbies?

Because of our licensing system in the UK it's always been a buyers (or RFDs) market.
Once you take off VAT and retailers margins you can soon get 30-40% less than you paid for it, and then the dealer selling the secondhand wants a margin.
Same with cars, bikes, machinery, try selling a little used item in the year after purchase, scary losses.
And all that's before we take into account the world after Covid.

Sounds like you are talking to the wrong dealers.....

Yes we can buy the same products new at trade ex VAT
Yes its our money buying them when we take them in.

But if the P/X drives the sale of a new item and still recovers a margin on the P/X item as well, then the dealer has made more than they would on the sale of the single item. (in this case the 20bore)
But... and its a big but.....you need to sell the used item sharpish or have large cashflow.
Confidence in the sale
or
Confidence in your bank balance

Give me a bell

You don't need to knock VAT off the retail price, VAT is only payable on the profit

If you only used a few rounds zeroing in the next four years and then booked a stalking trip in 4.5 years, that should be reason to keep the rifle.

No-one has mentioned that the second hand shotgun market is also fairly weak. The value of older side-by-sides seems to have plummeted, maybe something to do with plans to phase out non-lead shot. An older side-by side would be ideal for walked up game shooting. The cost of Bismuth or non-lead is inconsequential if only firing a few shots.

I would also vote to keep it and cobble together some pennies for a 2nd hand 20 bore shotgun. try guntrader or local dealers not Holts. I think people tend to chop and change too much - don't get me started on calibre fads. I've had periods in my life where I hardly touched my rifle but I always return to it. I look forward to teaching my kids how to shot with my teenage airgun, my shotguns and my rifles.

I was alway told buy a good rifle first off as the second hand rifle market is pretty slow. I thing generally it’s a pain buying a new rifle unless you have an empty slot. Last 1 for 1 I did and I left the old rifle with the dealer to sell on... no trade in... and it’s still for sale years later!!

As already said hold on to it for a year.
Your round count must be nigh on non existent. If you must sell, split it & might get a bit more. I'd enjoy my my annual stalk with my own until my doctor retired me, like L'Oréal say's "Your worth it"
