Selling venison to the public - product/public liability insurance

Hi all

I'm considering selling some carcasses direct to the public this coming season, what with the game dealers trying to get carcasses for free these days (if they take them at all).

Not interested in getting really heavily involved (yet, at least) and processing the carcasses into butchered cuts, but just selling them whole, in the fur as per regulation. I have quite a few people who have asked me for carcasses but as much as I take a great pride in producing top notch venison and have excellent facilities in which to do it, it would only take one unhappy customer who thinks they've become ill as a result of one of my carcasses to shut the whole operation down. Some of them are likely to go to raw (dog and cat) feeding folk, but even so I'm cautious about doing this without having some insurance behind me - one of the top commercial raw food brands got in a lot of trouble a while back with TB infected venison.

With that in mind, has anyone experience of taking out product/public liability insurance for the sale of game? BASC/NGO etc do not cover this apparently. Recommendations on who to go with?

Thanks for your comments.

Very good question, Just spoke to a friend who sells venison, he's insured with the NFU for third party liability, as house insurance won't cover you as even though your not really a business you have to act like one for local authority and insurance reasons, i hadn't even considered it,

I'm with the NFU as part of my commercial insurance so includes public / employers / product / pollution etc. Not cheap is the phrase I'd use but can be tailored to suit. I could get some coverage cheaper elsewhere but I have to cover a wide area, including food production, fieldsports and holiday accommodation and the NFU are a one stop shop. A chat with your local EHO could be helpful.
