Shane MacGowan

I must be as ignorant as that high court judge who asked "What is the Beatles?" in the 60s.

I don't listen to music. I don't listen to the radio and I don't have a TV. Therefore it's not difficult for me not to hear of something/someone who's apparently famous.
After reading this thread I asked my wife who was Shane McGowan. She was as incredulous as you are, and immediately subjected me to a recording of Fairytale of New York.
So now I know.
But I'll forget about it pretty soon.

I can't imagine my life without music.
I come from a family of talented musicians, and I've fathered children who are talented musicians, but I'm completely tone deaf. It just sounds to me like a jumble of noise, and I get no pleasure from listening to it. Many genres just sound the same to me.
However, I do enjoy watching musicians perform live, particularly with regard to the subtle interactions between the performer and the audience, and the reactions of individuals within the audience. So for me, it's all about the performance, not the noise. Hence why listening to recorded music does nothing for me at all.

Not something I can relate to but interesting to hear the perspective.

I've got a fairground organ in my ears permanently. Sometimes it gives way to church bells or a distant conversation that I can't understand.

Does music not distract your brain from the tinnitus, it seems to be a popular method of relief?

It's a bugger, ain't it?
I can hear the high temperature warning alarm on my chiller right now, despite the fact I'm sitting in a highseat 60 miles away. And the chiller is switched off.

It's got to be louder that the tinnitus. I was on a computer course about 30 years ago, when suddenly everyone else got up and walked out. A fire alarm bell, just a routine test, was going off about 25 feet away though an open window. I couldn't hear it! Bird song is the same!

Anyone seen the news a few days ago about Shane’s 303 rifle from the 1916 Rising?
Gifted to him by a friend and his wife said he kept it by the side of the fireplace.
She recently noticed it was missing and appealed for its return.
Now, a former friend and manager has contacted Shane’s wife to say he has it and Shane had asked him to look after the rifle in case wifey got upset about having it in the house!
Was it legal to own as was? Obviously not an obsolete calibre.
Seems like the “Friend” has some questions to answer.
Perhaps Foxyboy43 can chime in?
Cheers, Ken.

The rifle may be deactivated, no one seems to know, assuming that its not and that Shane only had one firearm, there is no requirement to keep it in a locked cabinet, the “ friend “ may indeed have to answer a few questions and listen to a bollocking but under the circumstances it’s unlikely that they would be charged with unlawful possession.
If a certificate is required by the Mrs, she can apply for one, sentimental attachment is recognised as a good reason to possess here.

Hmmm.
Nice relic to have - up here in Northern Ireland which last time I looked out the window is still in the UK you could have it on your FAC for range use if a member of an approved club; or exceptionally for possession as an heirloom or some such reason but without authority to hold ammunition. Frequently these old rifles or Mausers turn up in lofts/coal bunkers etc. though they are inevitably part of the consignment landed at Larne to fight the then proposed Home Rule for Ireland. Paradoxically these were to arm British Loyalists rather than the Irish Republicans (who were active in their own gun-running at the same time) but in both cases the guns were to fight the British initially and at some later date probably each other - confusing innit?
Southern Ireland’s firearms legislation detail is outside my ken but I know they are very strict on firearms, especially pistols, so I imagine if it is “live” it would be pretty difficult to possess without good reason i.e. membership of an approved club.
Several members are from “down South” so they could elaborate…
