I feel the lead ban is peoples excuse for giving up! There's plenty of steel proof shotguns about or ones cheap enough it won't matterIt does make a difference and tbh the lead ban need not kill off anyone's shooting
Indeed. Although you don't get to spread them over 5 years, you pay the costs when they happen.I never get this it's getting expensive. Shooting is still cheaper than other hobbies like fishing or Motorsports!
The costs are relatively cheap when you spread them over the 5 years your ticket lasts!
Yes but anyone whose had a renewal in the last 2 years has seen the cost explosion we can all now plan for our next renewal unless yours is the year the changes happen we all have year minimum to plan for two increase in price!Indeed. I think its more the case that the cumulative burden of the red tape and "process" is what's strangling everything...not only shooting.
Yes. I have just had another two of my guns...an AYA Yeoman Ejector and my Somerton back from having the chokes opened (and the AYA fine bored)....for that very reason. AYA Yeoman Ejectors or the No4 are now cheap enough that they can be almost thrown away. I think also we will see a growing number of single barrel guns (which for UK means self loading) where again the barrel can be thrown away. The downside is that heavily choked English,French, German or Belgian 65mm chambered boxlock guns that require the chokes opened are not worth the cost of such unless of sentimental value.I feel the lead ban is peoples excuse for giving up! Words fail me.Should be some good guns going cheap then
Single barrel Baikal opened to half choke will deal with any standard steel cartridgeYes. What an atrocious attitude.Look on the bright side , the more people that give up the more permission available![]()
Alas though from another point of view the days of folk bringing some quirky old thing with an "odd" patent action or design for a show and tell and "have a go" will die out as such guns are usually 2 1/2" chambered English boxlocks with as made chokings that won't manage any sort of steel use. So the Ward side by side or similar plus that hammer gun that only came out on the Boxing Day walk around or on the squirrel days are finished if the gun (as in the "shooter") doesn't have a pocket that is deep enough for bismuth. I fear that the effect of the lead ban will be much our our heritage in shotguns will cross the Atlantic as USA buyers fill up at post lead ban auctions. There's plenty of steel proof shotguns about or ones cheap enough it won't matter
That's the tip of the iceberg. Then there are the costs of the medical form which is well into 3 figures for many, the cost of parking your guns at an RFD while your renewal takes months on end, costs of admin, variations, etc etc.Yes but anyone whose had a renewal in the last 2 years has seen the cost explosion we can all now plan for our next renewal unless yours is the year the changes happen we all have year minimum to plan for two increase in price!
Buying a couple of boxes of Bismuth to get an oldball out the cabinet a couple of times a year isn't terrible! I hope we don't lose fine made old guns to AmericaAlas though from another point of view the days of folk bringing some quirky old thing with an "odd" patent action or design for a show and tell and "have a go" will die out as such guns are usually 2 1/2" chambered English boxlocks with as made chokings that won't manage any sort of steel use. It's not really the tip of the iceberg we all know the costs of every part of our certs has gone up! And people need to be more on at firearms departments for the lazy approach of the departments! That's the tip of the iceberg. The comparisons with other hobbies is spurious because those are the cost of the hobbies, not the cost of opening the door. It is cheaper than owning racehorses, yachting and motorsport but that's like saying caviar is cheap food because building your house out of gold is much more expensive.
I might not like it but I can live with the cost of an odd box of Bismuth on a squirrel/walk about day just for the enjoyment of using a Damascus hammer gun. I know I could shoot better with an O/U steel proof or a semi auto but that's not the point of enjoying one of these "old" guns. Lets be honest you are not going to be thrashing one of these on clays are you?Alas though from another point of view the days of folk bringing some quirky old thing with an "odd" patent action or design for a show and tell and "have a go" will die out as such guns are usually 2 1/2" chambered English boxlocks with as made chokings that won't manage any sort of steel use. Try chuck in 250 carts and ill have itWords fail me.
You are certainly not wrong based on my personal experience.I may well be wrong on this but did the hunting ban lead to an upsurge in new firearms ownership (It definitely led to lamp shy foxes) so further restriction might not be a death knell of shooting sports but maybe a change of direction.
As your UK based none of this "cold dead hands" stuff then? It’s sad but true it seems more are giving up these days I know a few of the older boys this end just giving it up not worth the agro anymore to them plus the whole lead band crap and health issues I’ve been shooting since I was eight now 57 in June had a ticket 40 years now and think I will see the day when I don’t have guns the way it’s going with the government and policing ect before I pop my clogs very sad
