Shooting freehand

With consistent practice I can shoot foxes out to 300 m with night vision off sticks .Same daylight with deer in the engine room .Anybody advocating shooting offhand beyond 50 m,follow ups withstanding,is an idiot and really shouldn’t have a firearms .
Ive read on here more than I’ve written and the theme in the main is welfare so why would anyone jeopardise that to boost an ego .
Ive shot deer offhand under 50 m ,it’s not hard and I think anyone who can’t do that first time without years of practice should maybe hand in their firearm .
Astounding nonsense.
I know it's not nice for me to say so but, hey, you are calling me an idiot.
I shoot off hand ("free hand", in the video) 3-4 times a week with CF rifles at 100 yards. In this season I shoot a 7" x 9" steel plate.

This is from one of my last outings. The cartridge is 2.25 inches long so I guess that puts pretty close to a 4" , five shot group. This was from a Ruger bolt action but I most often shoot my Tikka 308 T3 as practice for my identical 7mm-08. Four inches is not that difficult if you practice.

Again. Tikka 308 off hand on an average day. All 100 yards, standing.

So don't give me that crap about it can't be done. To hunt in my country you better be able to shoot off your own hind legs or stay in the truck and wait for the hunters to come back. ~Muir

I couldn't agree more!

100 yards (ish), offhand, .270 Abolt, 3 with 2 shots, and witnessed. In fact, I believe that to this day campfire ballads as still sung about the funny-talking feller who performed this feat :lol:

There are far too many 'experts' in life who are brilliant at spouting nonsense, but can't back up their claims. I think the SD massive is pretty good at both spotting them, and weeding them out

Twenty-twos are their own study. Any kind of a breeze is a killer.
Follow through is especially important with a .22 which is why it makes ideal practice for center fire shooting. I shoot off hand .22 at every opportunity. The Tikka T1X I bought makes shouldering any of my T3's second nature.~Muir

@bowji john I think that's a pretty good try, I count 15 holes on a sheet of A4.

As @Muir says .22 at that range offhand is pretty unforgiving. Right now I've not got anywhere that I can shoot 100 yards offhand since I've only got 50 metres available at my local place and the 100 metre full bore range is bench and prone only. I'm itching to have a go but I think I would be hard pushed to match or beat what you've done.

It is great fun isn't it

It shows up the slightest error in the basics (trigger control etc)

When bench and off sticks becomes a bit routine it makes for a challenging alternative

if you only have 50m to play in then perhaps make your target circle smaller.

Shoot to a count of 3

Build in a change of position - anything to broaden the skill set

I suspect .22LR into a 2" target @ 50m will easily approximate to a centre fire 4" at 100m

If you hunt in wood land very slowly then 50-70m is about when deer start hear you. So really need to get ready to point and shoot. Down here we have the three second rule if you are actively stalking in thick forest which is about how long before you see the deer and it bolts. So no time to set up any sticks.
Get a thermal mate and push that to 90.

@Muir Your Tikka 308, off hand (on a very good day) is exceptional. Well done that man.

@bowji john Out of interest I just dug a target out that I shot last Autumn as a warm up for the 50 yard .22 sporting rifle offhand comp that I do, it's a PL8 and the 9 ring is a touch under 4" the group size is 2" x 1 3/4" so a bit more work needed there. Can't remember what the conditions were like at the time. I used to shoot the same target at 50 metres with a Free Pistol as in the Olympics and at one time I could generally group within the 8 ring, a tad under 6".

Thanks. I wouldn't have posted it if one our SD members wasn't spotting my shots! Sometimes the Gods of Shooting smile upon me.... :) ~Muir

You know where I am, have a run over, 100 yards and big s#itpile to shoot into.

This is pretty typical. 90m, running goats. Seven shots, one miss, five clean kills, one wounded and dispatched with the knife. 308 Win. I won’t post the photos of the damage the 165gr Speer does to goats...

I love it when every now and then someone comes along with an absolute game changer

A whole new level to aspire to

I'm sure the wide angle lens exaggerates the perceived distance a bit - but even so, that is outstanding marksmanship
