Shooting freehand

I always brace with the sling when shooting offhand. Got in the habit with my little Weihrauch .22 because the wind blows it about.

There's a guy on You Tube called "Rifle Chair" and he has an annual event called the Cabin Fever Challenge.
It's shot at 100yds from the standing, kneeling, prone and sitting positions. You only have one target, it's an 8" plain black circle. 5 shots from each position. Shots in the black score 5 points, anything outside the black is a miss and scores nothing. It's a timed shoot with the time starting at your first shot and ending on your last.
It's hard. Not many of those filming their efforts manage to put all 20 of their shots in the black.
Primarily, it's meant to be shot with open-sighted rifles like Lee Enfields and Mausers, but a lot seem to shoot it with scoped AR15 type rifles.

That sounds like an interesting challenge, might give that a go when I have made some more ammo. Would need to make allowance for the mod to call down as that's a lot of shots in quick succession.
I would like to thank everyone for the tips and hints that have been put up and for not taking the pi$$ about me falling the challenge. I am going to try it again soon using the tips I have been given and will post the results up on here.
Thanks again and any more advice will be appreciated

With consistent practice I can shoot foxes out to 300 m with night vision off sticks .Same daylight with deer in the engine room .Anybody advocating shooting offhand beyond 50 m,follow ups withstanding,is an idiot and really shouldn’t have a firearms .
Ive read on here more than I’ve written and the theme in the main is welfare so why would anyone jeopardise that to boost an ego .
Ive shot deer offhand under 50 m ,it’s not hard and I think anyone who can’t do that first time without years of practice should maybe hand in their firearm .
Your on about welfare but you shoot using night vision of sticks to 300 yards, sounds like you really care.

Probably going against the swell of opinion here but in fairness to chap questioning unsupported shooting (at 100m+ by the look of it) i have to say that even if i could do it on paper it would be as a last resort only that I did I on game. Maybe I’ve got too accustomed and reliant on using sticks, bipod, tree, fence post etc.... I’ve certainly shot enough deer to know Id prefer to make the first shot count which puts unsupported at the bottom of the list.

I don’t understand it. You normally can’t move a inch on this forum without some DSC best-practice clone calling you out over a technicality and yet here we have an apparent newbie questioning freehand shooting past 100m (all-be-it a little abrasively) and not a dickie bird!

He's an interesting guy , ex forces and a Canadian Ranger . I've talked to him a few times on Canadian Gun Nuts , he's an even bigger Lee Enfield freak than me . I do the Cabin Fever Drill a few times a year , it's a good test of your general shooting abilities . I've failed more times than not . Strangely enough , the last time I shot a clean drill , I did it with an Isreali converted 7.62 98 Mauser . It has the worst iron sights out of my issue rifles , go figure . I watched a buddy of mine shoot it clean with a Russian SKS that looked like it crossed the Atlantic strapped to the deck of the ship . It's a fun drill and will show you very quickly where your shooting skills are lacking . It is good practice , no matter what your favoured shooting style is .

This is my spinner target post in the back yard....and a visitor that’s pretty bold!

from my kitchen window I can plink away freehand and it’s about 20 yards, usually takes at least 6 shots before I have hit all 4!

Believe it of not, we lost our golden lab a few years ago, she was called Holly, so we had her cremated and spread her ashes around the soil and planted a holly bush...and the kids, wife and me were getting upset the deer where destroying it so it got fenced in...lol.

we lost our other lab at Christmas and are waiting until spring to plant a Buddleia bush....as his name was Buddy....gonna need a bigger fence though!

Gixer

Hi,
The whole point of learning to shoot like this for me is that I know how to do it should I ever have to, I cirtainly have no desire to shoot offhand at any live quarry when other more stable platforms are available and practical in the given situation. The initial thread that made me try this and at this range made me think, could I do it in an emergency situation at 100 yards if I had to because there is a wounded animal and it have no other choice? I too have become too reliant on sticks and bipod so want to improve my shooting abilities. That said I have also been in the situation where deer have spooked at me setting up sticks in the woods at 25-50 yards that I could have shot offhand if I had done the practice and was confident in doing so. I am working now on the theory that whatever range I would shoot live quarry at, I should be able to shoot a target of the same size as the kill zone at twice the range, I am still practicing and improving and will continue to do so. Please don't think this video and discussion are about pushing people to shoot deer at 100 yards plus offhand as that's not the intention at all.

As for the apparent newbe you mentioned, I don't think he is new to shooting at all as after complaining about this thread and the ethics of shooting offhand at 100yards he has stated that he is happy to shoot foxes at 300 meters plus off sticks with night vision, for me that's pushing it but each to their own and if he is confident doing that then that's his call but it's was totally uncalled for when he started throwing comments around about people's suitability to own firearms, particularly as the video and thread is actually about shooting targets and the worst thing that can happen is I miss the piece of wood and shoot some mud as the location I set up has more than enough backstop.
Hope this has cleared up the situation.

Not pop at you Dave and whilst your explanation above is just I read your original post as coming across I think maybe others didn’t and from there it descended into the mire and the point got lost all together.

Hi,
I didn't see it as a pop at me at all, there have been a few comments that have taken the whole thread out of context, it was an interesting thing to try and something that I will try again, I can highly recommend giving it a go if time allows.

Just a comment about the offhand shooting video I posted earlier.

I’ve found offhand shooting much improved either standing, or sitting on the quad, after shortening the 22” barrel to 18”, using an overbarrel suppressor, and mounted in the DPT Hunter chassis with the AR pistol grip. It’s a nice “medium light” weight all up, as I have said before I do not like shooting super light rifles offhand.

The last serious effort of offhand shooting I did was shooting donkeys, pigs and scrub bulls in Australia, all off a quad bike, some standing. Couple or three years ago. That was using a Ruger Hawkeye in 35 Whelan and that thing knocked me from one side of the continent to the other, my shoulder was well sore after several days of that.

My DPT chassis doesn’t even have a recoil pad on it, straight alloy butt plate. Shooting 165s with a staunch load of Varget. Don’t even feel the recoil. I know what design of rifle I prefer now, just from trying it out. That’s the way I have found it, your mileage will undoubtedly vary....

What’s wrong with that mate .This thread seems to be going along the lines of shoot to your strengths and off sticks with nv is one of mine .If it’s not for you ,just say so and move on .
