shooting into water

Think I made a mistake. If you want to shoot into water to retrieve the bullet must the water be enclosed? Like in bottle or sealed tank. shot .243 Peregrine 80gr through 3 buckets of water at 100yds approimately 900mm. But the bullet passed through and out the back. If I used a 25ltr barrel end on should the bullet not exit? cheers for the experience in advance.

You need 6 x 25ltr barrels minimum you’ll be surprised how many they will go through and that’s speaking from experience 🤙

i have shot tracer into water and you'd be amazed at how steep an angle you can shoot it from and the round still comes out at weird angles!

Hi maybe me but are you waiting to shoot a bullet in the water to see the effect of shooting it in to water has on the bullet or ?
if so wouldn’t shooting it through anything else but water give you a completely different outcome
Ps when once get land cleared witch had a sizeable lake by feo he made it very clear not even to shoot over it

Trying to collect the bullet to study expansion. Have not got gell so its the next best.

Seem to remember wet newspaper being talked about for expansion tests… if you happen to have a massive pile of them to hand 😂

I used to shoot into water to stun mullet or trout.
Wasn’t bothered about the bullet unless it ricocheted.

Get some screen wash cans. 6-10 should do. My 6.5x55 and 308 would go through 4-5 aspen containers at 100m.
Only done it with the lids on.

Or shoot into a soft pear hag / soft grassy bank. Go in a couple of feet and dig them out.

Or get a wheelie bin, fill with newspapers and water to the top. Let it soak overnight. Tip on its side and then shoot bullets into it. Then un peal layers.

Wetpack is reckoned to be a very good surrogate for big game animals.

I have in the past shot vertically down into a barrel full of water and successfully captured the .308 Win bullet- perfectly mushroomed!
I seem to recall I placed a thin sheet of ply over the barrel and shot off a step ladder to get the angle correct. It worked but I and all of my equipment got very wet indeed!! Have you considered filling multiple plastic bags with water and retaining them in an overturned barrel?

Did it years ago when moving back from canada and we had a 18ft round inflatable swiming pool we decided to chuck away after.
Did 300 wm 243 223 12gauge slug and 22 rf,
Dramatic but i think the 22 went the furthest, will try to remember

Wallpaper paste, cheap, easy to mix and a good compromise between water and gel…
No need for KY, much less
ball-i-stick gel, and you’re hopefully going to be told you’re ‘well hung’ - a ‘most interesting position’ At World of Wallpaper surely beckons… 😆
