That’s exactly where we are heading - the anti’s are being clever, basically make it such a pain to get into the sport that nobody bothers anymore….voila! The death of all things shooting.

This is a big reason why the pro-gun US folks defend every attempt so ferociously, as they know it just leads to losing more ground eventually. And I see their point!

It never ceases to amaze me how many UK shotgun and rifle owners just don’t get this and simply will not accept their preferred shooting discipline is in anyway endangered by the lose of an allied sport or increased restrictions on such.

I still recall the comment of a fellow rifle & pistol club member on the day we both surrendered our pistols at Sevenoaks Police Station:

“Don’t worry, they’ll never take the long ones.”

To say I was dumbfounded would be an understatement and I’ve never spoken to the knob bloke since.

A genuine asset on the benefits to society on our last licensing regime would be a useful excercise. No benefit, no law might be the outcome or more likely a focus on legislative action were benefits accure and less time wasted on assessing if land is "safe" for a 243/Creedmore or similar calibre.

A good post. I'm glad you've looked into this and can tell us that the problem is as microscopically irrelevant as the petitions say.
There is a problem and it is completely insignificant and a waste of taxpayers' money to even examine.

The views of the pro licensing and anti licensing bring up interesting questions. What strikes me is that it is the person that needs to be licensed rather than the item. It stands to reason that if you are sensible enough to possess a firearm then you will also be ok to own a crossbow, air rifle, powerful car, motorbike, chainsaw, samurai sword etc etc. on the other hand there are people who aren’t fit to own anything more dangerous than colouring pencils and it is identifying these people that is the key. Let’s be honest the current firearms licensing setup does not work efficiently and needs reform. It could be streamlined quite readily without adverse effect on the public which would benefit everyone. For example get rid of the 1:1 variations and allow each deer stalker to possess up to 5 (??) deer calibre rifles that may be swapped and changed at will. Similar setup for target shooters, foxers, vermin controllers etc. The process of firearms licensing cannot be substantially different to the CRB checking process to spot kiddy fiddlers and those who put vulnerable people at risk. Could these processes not be largely combined to everyone’s benefit?
