Spaniel won’t pick up ducks

Was out with my friends sprocker tonight. Was told he didn’t pick up ducks either said I bet it will so duly shot one and sure enough the dog just sat there looking at it. No amount of encourage from him could get it to pick it off the flash.

I made a few motions and lo and behold off she went and picked it dropped it at my feet. Honestly couldn’t make it up after that another two came down each time same story.

Meanwhile my cocker will go self employed and pick a duck from a flash on the neighbouring county Spaniels are stupid .

Things might be going in the right direction! I got her fired up and today she actually picked up the dummy with duck wings. I can get her on real duck

If you have Pheasant winged dummies, try adding a single duck wing feather to it. If the dog picks it, gradually, over several days, add more duck feathers. Hopefully, you may get to the point where you can attach a complete a full wing.

Hi mate I have done this and now she is constantly picking up the dummy with a pair of mallard wings, hopefully try her on a teal in the next few days. I might put it in some tights as was suggested then rip a hole in so she feels the feathers

That's good news, but go slowly.

The foot of a pair of tights works well if she is picking birds with loose feathers, i.e. pigeon, A mouthful of feathers can put then off until they have got the hang of picking them.

Be careful where you source your teal, they can be found in some really dirty smelly places like slurry pit overflows.
Smell it yourself before you try the dog with it.
