Springer air rifle for hunting

Hello, At this moment in time the Springer that many a buying is the Cometa, The 220 Compact with the silencer would be ideal for verming control or even the Fenix 400 compact with silencer seems more refined

I've had a number of springers over the years. When the last one died, I replaced it with a PCP. PCPs are exceptionally good and well worth considering before you buy anything.

Regards

JCS
Have to say I agree 100%. Many years ago I had an HW77k but changing to a Falcon FN19 PCP was a massive improvement for pest control as it was so much more accurate. I now use an FAC BSA S10 which is another quantum leap forward over a non FAC air rifle IMO.
I'd never go back to a springer for pest control unless it was at very close ranges - I am way more confident if achieving humane kills with a PCP and for me that is what it's all about.

For a springer have a good look at the Weirauch HW99 - its nice a light. The HW35 and 80 are beautifully built, but heavy, and HW35 has an annoying latch that needs opening each time.

I like springers - they just work and are simple. I have BSA Airsporter 22 I was given in 1982. I keep it down south. Three weeks ago, a squirrel on bird table. First shot for at least 12 months and squirrel fell off bird table dead.

I have a old mk 1 177 Webley Vulcan that I got second hand back in 1984 that I still use around the garden it had a tuning kit on it about 20 yrs ago and is good enough for 30yard squirrels . I also have a 22 Exocet that is a little bit more refined for a springer !! Just killed a rat with it this morning around the hen run 😁

I had a Vulcan as a kid. Wonderful thing!

HW 80 and Air Arms TX are my favourites for use on quarry . PCP are somewhat easier to shoot well with but i find they always seem to play up more frequently be it rifle or the charging kit .
The Airgun is ideal on small plots of land and around buildings

If you want to kill rats, pigeons and squirrels, you will find it difficut to beat a .25cal. If you have used a Cometa before, The Cometa 400 with adjustible Walnut stock you will find hard to beat for the money.

Add a decent FFP scope, H&N FTT pellets, get used to the trajectory (it isn't that bad) and nothing will be safe within 40 yards.

There was a time when I actually preferred a .25 than a .22 air rifle!

HW80. If you can't find one, wait until you do ! My old '80 has probably killed more squirrels than you've ever seen, most of those with the original open sights too ! In 12 months I saved every penny that I got for squirrel tails (11p each) and bought a scope and mounts for it (over £180) and a packet of Hamlet cigars.

It is, of couse, in the 'proper' squirrel killing calibre of .22" ;)

Hello, Oh those Hamlets !!!!!!, Brings back lots of Happiness memories

Any love for the BSA Lightening GRT? I haven't got hands-on with one but most reviews I have seen have been pretty positive. Technically not a spring gun, but I think you will find that rams are replacing springs at the "better" end of the break barrel market (my impression anyway) it would be supporting part of the British gun trade, which is a nice thing to do (if the rifle is actually any good at least).

Watching with interest as have I fond memories of rabbit shooting years gone by with a weihrauch 90.
How would these two compare?

Air Arms TX200 MkIII in .177, will last a lifetime, English built quality, buy once, cry once.
Alternatively, although very rare, an Air Arms Elite break barrel. I always found it easier to load a break barrel quicker than an underlever. It's much more instinctive.
