Stalking Boots.

I had Meindl Dovre extremes but was told by my friend in the army that you can't get better than Altberg. I took his advice and I have been really disappointed in them, I think the leather is too soft so for real hard ground they wear quite quickly, I find the fit uncomfortable and they never seem to have worn in as well as the meindl's. I run 2 pairs of boots at a time so that if one pair gets wet I can let the others dry slowly while I wear the other pair and I can rotate my waxing, it makes your boots last longer but obviously costs double. Even doing that the leather on them is cracked in less than one season whereas the meindl's last 2 and a bit. I even don't like the eyelets on them. Half way up the boot they have this ****ing stupid "snatch block" type thing that traps the lace so that you can't tie the laces with an even taughtness all up the length of the boot. Oh and the laces they were supplied with were too short also. I'll wear the altbergs until they fall to bits or the end of the season whichever comes first then they are going in the bin and I'll be going back to Meindl.

I am aware Altberg offer a free repair service but unless that service includes replacing them with Dovre extremes I'm not interested.

I should have just thought if it ain't broke don't fix it.

oh and don't even start me on le chameau mouflon. Utter crap.

I have these and am pretty happy with them, though mine are neoprene. Wear them for most of my stalking as it is / was (long story) dairy farm mostly.

Not sure where you got this info from. I went to their shop last year to get a pair of Altberg boots and was quoted an extra £300 to get the lasts made and the cost for a set of their made to measure boots was over £1000.

Got a pair of their off the shelf gamekeeper boots but not impressed to be honest - most uncomfortable boots I've ever owned.

Do NOT go for Harkila mountain hunt gtx boots.I bought a pair and returned them after only 10 months as they started to let in water.
I waited a month to be told that they couldn't be repaired or replaced so was offered a refund.
Very disappointed and now have to search for new boots once I get the refund in my account!

I have had 4 pairs of their boots and had every pair tailor made. Never paid a penny more!

Blackrider,

Boots are a personal thing, maybe best to try a few and see which feel most comfy.

I had a pair of Brashers for years and they were brilliant, albeit perhaps not supportive enough round the ankle for very rough ground. When the Brashers let go I got a pair of Altberg Velthogs. They've been superb. They were comfy straight out of the box and have worn very well, although I am an amateur so don't hammer them.

Hope this helps

Cheers,

Bob

Just bought a pair of Harkila pro hunter GTX 10" Kevlar for £99 .00 special offer from Bush Wear

Meidl Dovre Extreme. They are one of those purchases that I have never questioned myself if they were worth the £230 price tag.

If I lost mine tomorrow I would be straight down Tredders to get a new pair. You could not go wrong IMO.

Cheers

have these great boots

Like yourself I cycle between two pairs of boots the altbergs and Blackislanders and they are both in great condition waxed all the time and dried after each outing warn for shooting, dog walking, stalking, beating etc and never missed a beat....

what wax are you using?

I have had various boots, the last pair I had for 8 years were a pair of hunter high scree, great boots good support, but alas now no longer available,so I went for a pair of black islander boots, best decision iv made, great boots for the rough heather and light enough for general day to day work.
all the best in your search

New Alt-Berg, Warrior Mk2 Microlite aqua - in olive too.
Dry, comfortable, Vibram, warm and supportive.
Buy one size up.

Deer man, no I didn't go for the custom made job, but to be fair the Dovre extremes weren't custom built either.

Mongoose, I use the wax that Altberg sell, the stuff in a green tin, can't remember what it's called and I am not at home but I bought several tins with the boots.

They really don't like heather, it seems to wear the leather like sandpaper. Even that snow we had a few weeks ago was wearing the leather. I wear them every day and I cover ALOT of ground on foot so they do have a tough time but then again comparing them to the meindl boots there is no contest.

They are a hundred times better than the chameau lace up boots and better than a pair of Gronnels I had a few years back which may as well have been made of steel. Most uncomfortable boots ever.
