Stalking / Hunting Vehicles

I don't know if this thread has been done already, but what are stalkers using as their preferred vehicle of choice for hunting?

Mine is a Land Rover 110 CSW, 1983. Presently undergoing a full restoration and 300tdi conversion.

1999 TD5 Defender. Full length fabric sunroof int he back that two people can stand out of when lamping. Gun safe across wheel arches, two waffle boards behind that which you can stand on for lamping, convert to a dog platform when stalking and houses the carcass tray below which sits between the arches. Waffle boards are great to have about when you get stuck. There's not much room in the back of a 90 so everything is dual use and pretty efficient. It's raised about 1" and on softer springs and Koni shocks so it rides really well. Winch on the front, ground anchor in the back and a shooting platform on the roof which also carries a portable high seat.

And before anyone says anything, it has been very reliable (touching wood as I type).

Would love to see a pic?! 👍

Toyota RAV4

I considered a Land Rover but its 60 miles to where I shoot and I need to still be able to walk when i get there :D

Must be said that after three jeeps and a Shogun I was forced to get this by the cost of fuel and I thought it would be rubbish

Surprisingly it isn't and it does twice the MPG than my previous Shogun so I am a happy bunny

Saving £500 a month on fuel made up for any concerns I had about getting a soft roader

My defender finally died from chassis corrosion, after some 30 years, 15 with me as a my stalking/shooting/towing truck. It was believe it or not the most reliable car i have had, and this includes everything from range rovers to porsches, it just kept going no matter what we did to it. i now have a discovery 4 for my day by day stuff, after some idiot smashed into me range rover, and a ssangyong rexton as a rough tow truck, for getting the argo about the place, the argo is the main shooting vehicle really.
The rexton is not really my kind of car, i own it with my stalking pal but with a 2.7 ltr engine and good 4x4 system it pulls well, has loads of boot space and all leather interior it is actually not bad, heated seats, auto headlights and wipers, it is quite comfortable. It is not a range rover or discovery for sure, it has a floaty strange feel when driving and is vague in steering and braking, certainly when compared to the disco. It tows the argo really well and was cheap enough that i am not bothered about scratching it, or throwing a hind into the back of it. So far it appears to be sound, and reliable. there is nothing wrong with it, it just would not have been on my radar as a motor to chose. It will be getting very chunky tyres soon, as everything struggles on our steep muddy icy hill road to our main stalking grounds. Even the landy struggled at times

Here you go. Platform on the roof. Rock sliders on the sides incorporate solid bar door locks that you would have to grind out if you didn't have the key. Best security device I have found for a LR.

Gun safe at the back under the rubber mat is bolted to the wheel arch tops. You can see lower waffle board and carcass tray below.

Looking up through the sun roof. Roof platform has the same size hole cut in it. Standing on the lower waffle board puts the shooter at the perfect height for shooting.

With the second waffle board in place and rubber mat folded down everything is hidden from view. The somewhat territorial WHV in his bed on top would also discourage anyone from looking too closely.

I have tried to make everything dual use, gun safe is also a dog platform, waffle boards are great when you get stuck and also used as the shooting step when foxing out of the roof and form the back of the dog platform when travelling. Carcass tray fits perfectly below and uses that space efficiently - one fallow, two roe or 3 munties capacity. If I shoot any more they go in a carcass bag which sits behind the tray and is stowed in the tray when not in use.

Great set up

Part of me was hoping that you were going to say that you use the Harley in your avatar as a Stalking/Hunting vehicle tac29136 :-D, I'm sure you could attach a rifle slip to the hard tail somewhere, but these rigid zero type frames are a nightmare off road!

Shame you had to get rid of your "other" stalking vehicle - my sympathies for letting the Ninja go...... not quite as useful as the Landy, but a he*l of a lot more fun - probably easier to keep your licence in the Landy as well:-D
