Indeed, Creag Dhu..... the battle cry of Clan Macpherson......Craig Dhu
Funnily enough, the last time I walked up the Creag Dhu (the hill) I ended up carrying a fair selection of ticks for my trouble!

Both Cluny estate and the late Tommy Macpherson's bit of land are just west of Newtonmore.
The Macpherson estate near Kingussie is Balavil.
No, that wasn't a Macpherson to my knowledge (who killed the Red Fox)

My maternal Grandma was a McDonald, theres a clan kilt somewhere in the family drawer.I’m a MacPherson but it wasn’t me.

It is a well known fact over here that many centuries ago the Scots let us have the kilt and in exchange we let them have the secret and mystical means by which to make Whiskey. Sadly as none of the Alba types had had an education they couldn’t spell it and over the centuries it slowly evolved from grunts and urgent hand signals to “Whisky” - shame really but fortunately an easy means to differentiate between quality distillations brought from heaven by angels and supp for the indigenous be-kilted big jessies!
The result of this earlyconbarter for us was the Saffron, none of your subservient to the local poofy laird’s particular colour scheme for us - real men went for a mustard yellow colour which has been worn to many wars with pride ever since and rightly so.
Sooo wind forward to a few years ago when lady FB was to be honoured by HMQ with an MBE at Buckingham Palace (some said for being married to me) and himself was to attend in the usual supporting role - so what to wear? Easypeasy - the Saffron, what else? So off we went to the tailors and yer man emerged resplendent in full Saffron and rather pleased with the result. Then the soon to be bemedalled one announced “you can’t wear that - it clashes with my kingfisher blue outfit!”. So that was that, the outfit that was worn for centuries in many famous battles including the 1st July 1916 advance of The Ulsters at Thiepval Wood was promptly consigned to history. As a concession a kilt was indeed worn but saffron it was not. However the morr-in-law being an Aberdonian and also attending the investiture was quite made up seeing the man of her daughter’s dreams bedecked in a kilt - so that took some of the sting out of it.
Sooo, I give you…

And what would be the clan tartan?bedecked in a kilt
I believe that it was the Black Watch indeed though others may know better….Very similar to a Black Watch Tartan and very smart too...... when my long departed grandfather got his MBE it was top hat and tails! Different times indeed!
