Stalking Setup: How would you spend.

If you had to start off with no kit and had 5000 euro to spend how are you spending it?

So this money gets you your gun, glass, mounts, sticks etc.

My 308 deal fell through at last minute and looking for ideas :)

€1000 on rifle
€2000 on scope and attachments
€1000 on LRF binos (Vortex)
€300 moderator
€200 Viper sticks
€60 knife
€140 really good first aid kit (tourniquet, Celox gauze, compression bandages etc)
€100 bits and bobs (cut proof glove, nitrile gloves, ammo wallet, Mora roeing knife, head torch, stainless S hooks, camo snood/headover etc.)
€200 ammo?

So this was a question I faced, and solved it like this:

Tikka T3x Lite - c. 1250
Second hand Leupold, Vortex, Meopta or Sightron scope in 4-16 x 50 range. - c. 600.
Recknagel rail and rings: c. 300.
Hazel sticks cut from local wood, tied together with paracord and padded with pipe insulation: .50
Stock: PSE Elite: c. 850

Total cost: well less than 5000.

This assumes you already have binoculars (which I did). If not, add 800 or so for Vortex binoculars.

Where in the country are you?

Selection depends quite a bit on what are you trying to achieve.

Ends of the spectrum might be "as efficient as possible contractor style culling" and "traditional stalking with no pressure on cull figures".

Personally wouldn't go used in rifles that have popular UK chamberings like 243 and 270. In the grand scheme of things, dropping £1000-2000 for new rifle (including proper stock, possibly aftermarket) will see you to the grave especially with something like 308.

My choice would be T3x in your choice of barrel length/weight (Lite, CTR, Varmint) either SS or Cerakoted (including aftermarket job). Screw cut from factory. £20 spring for trigger if you think you need it. Proper but not over-the-top stock with integral aluminium frame (think B&C). Some flush cups installed if needed. Quality direct mount for scope (think Spuhr, forget jigsaw jobbies like Optilock).

Scope wise they are very good nowadays in sub £1000 price bracket, especially given UK shooting hours. And since scope is non-controlled item it's easy to swap and you won't loose that much in ££. Same goes for binos.

Curious as to why you wouldn't go for a used 243 or 270?

A positive thing if you buy a .338wm Tikka t3 light is that it doesn`t had many rounds through it the negative thing is you are not going to shoot it much either.
