Stalking Show butchery competition

Was that one done on Sunday morning and marked as table number two?. If so I was highly impressed :tiphat::thumb:

Some of the others though, Well - they looked like my sort of standard.

Yes, that was Sunday morning, station 2.

I would have liked to have cleaned those bones up a bit more, but everyone else had long since finished and gone, and I was beginning to feel a bit of a tit beavering away on my own!

So did you win then @VSS?
Yes, I did!
I was reasonably hopeful of getting into the top 5, but I was genuinely staggered when I heard that I'd won 1st prize!
I struggled a bit initially as the boning knife I'd been given was blunt, so I had to nip off backstage and borrow a steel to touch it up. I think a few other competitors were glad to make use of it too!

Last year I seem to recall that 1st, 2nd & 3rd places were all SD members (I was 3rd), and I was wondering if we'd managed something similar between us again this year?

A well deserved win I would say.

Last year I watched one poor guy blunt two knives trying with no success whatsoever to hack his way through bone. Perhaps it was simply the pressure of being watched. I genuinely felt sorry for the guy as one or two were shaking their heads and making not too subtle comments, but at least he had the guts to stand up there and give it a go which was more than I was willing to do.

Did any other members of this site compete?
Have we managed an SD grand slam again this year?
Yes, I was in the first session on Saturday morning.

Unfortunately not successful with a place but it was great fun and I’ll hopefully get another crack at it again in the future.

Brilliant show, really great supportive atmosphere from the fellow butchery competition entrants in my group, absolutely fantastic venison kebab from Game & Flames and superb deal on a new mincer and burger press from Weschenfelder.

Roll on 2026!

If you were placed you might not yet have heard. Deanne said it would most likely be Tuesday or Wednesday before she got around to phoning all the prizewinners. The only reason I know I won is because I happened to be still on site late on Sunday afternoon when they totted up scores, so they rounded me up for a photo shoot.
So keep your fingers crossed, you may yet be lucky 🤞

Which station were you on Saturday morning? I had a look at them (checking out the opposition) and there was some good work on display there.

How was it judged?

I should add that your presentation is amazing. I dread getting the sinew and silver skin off fillets - possibly hate it even more than extracting from clear fell! If at all possible I get the vet (my wife) to do it. She just seems to airily float a blade about a bit and presto! Beautiful meat. When I do it, it looks like road kill.
