Stalking trousers for the (Scottish) hill

I have Hoggs of Fife stuff for up here in the highlands and proves really well. Im quite a hot tempretured person and get quite sweaty out in the hills. These always keep me warm and dry and seem to get rid of heat in a decent manner also.
I have their Kincraig trousers, which I really like. No Scotland experience, though.

I,m with happy stalker on this one, normally wear trousers with a water proof membrane but if theres a lot of crawling in wet conditions
I find that a pair of berghaus waterproof over trousers are great and dont take up much space.

During minging winter weather I go for fleece leggings and a pair of waterproof salopettes from a mountaineering brand in a sandy colour that works for the light coloured hill grass in my area. They’re like the old goretex xcr fabric, so reasonably robust with thigh vents. As soon as you’re belly crawling through boggy ground all bets are off and some water is pushed through at the knees etc, but the fleece copes well when damp/wet. All the rest of the year it’s cheap soft shell trousers from decathlon or sportpursuit with a pair of lightweight army surplus mtp waterproof trousers if the weather turns.

I haven’t tried it myself but I‘m planning to. A pair of tight fitting and well insulated long johns and an army gore tex over trouser. The idea is that the over trouser will have a very slack fit and therefore be naturally ventilated to some degree while still keep the wet and wind off. This would be for winter conditions and moving about but not sweating excessively. Has anybody tried this?
Yes - this is what I do. Works perfectly.

they don't look remotely breathable, if your going to get soaking wet from the inside you may as well just get wet in the rain.

once the moisture gets to your skin then it doesn't take much of a breeze at all to chill you to the bone, the ex army route is possibly one to go down but for some reason i feel a bit awkward wearing it.
I can assure you that they are breathable been wearing them for years!

Absolutely plus having a full length two way zip for ventilation and they are quiet 👍

Maybe not that cold where we stalk, I use either a thin pair of trekking pants or Rovince Tick proof clothing. Either are not waterproof but dry very quick.
No issues with overheating.

Merino long johns, Fjallraven Vidda - yes they are not waterproof but dry very rapidly. And good gaiters abd tough boots.

And if its wet or snowy I have a pair of Keela munro salopettes that zip on without taking boots off.

On my top - merino base layer, fleece then a smock. Not particularly warm, but i work on be bold be cold basis when setting off.

But inside a dry bag in my pack is a light weight down jacket that goes on over the top on those inevitable waiting periods.

i have a few sets they are great for lowland stuff however i am looking for something waterproof and breathable that remains lightweight when wet something tweed definitely doesn't do!
Keepers and hill stalkers don't wear them for nothing!

What cloth (outer & lining) do Nomad use for their plus 4’s? It’s not particularly clear on their website.
I am not an expert on the nomad fabric so I am happy to be corrected by someone however:

The Nomad Stealth fleece fabric is a one layer garment (I.e. there is not a separate inner and outer layer).

It is a waterproof and breathable fabric - the fabric was developed in the uk by the late Phillip Wright (in conjunction with a few others) and the garments were produced/created through a Polish company.

I can attest to the waterproof abilities of the fabric, having used it in some pretty grim conditions on the hill.

Thanks for clarification. I need some replacement plus 4’s as it happens.

have gone for a set of KUIU Yukon TR rain trousers fingers crossed they are as good as others have mentioned because they weren't cheap but sat up on a cold wet hillside i don't think i will be complaining.

I have a pair of Nomad tweed pattern breeks that are good and breathable but if it's proper wet am on season two of these, Venatu Trousers 2.0 | ShooterKing less than half price in the sale. Venatu for when it's cold and Laydura or Moorland for not so cold

I use Fjallraven Vida pro as they dry quickly. Trying some Paramo pants with a full zip that you wear as trousers. Seem good initially mate has used them hill walking for years If it’s cold merino long johns underneath

Great price on those shooterking trousers Nick!
Yer, I bought another couple of pairs in the sale and one of the smocks in that khaki colour for white ground for £89, the only other properly light coloured smock is a Swazi in Tussock for about 3 or 4 times the price. Best thing about it is a full length side vent
