stihl chainsaw

I’m not sure what it’s like now but getting parts for Stihl’s products was a pain due to the no mail order policy, also some stihls are clamshell design which is not a good thing, for that reason I’ve always gone Husqy.

And it’s served me well.

Gixer
They seem to have back tracked on that at least a little, I think you can now mail order Stihl as normal. Probably realised they were massively annoying customers and dealers alike.

With a new saw u shouldnae need to worry about parts we'll atleast for 1st 2 years.
I&s engineering do most chainsaw parts next day at decent prices.

I really like the wee 231 and if u keep the chain sharp, esp running on 1.3mm guage cuts really well esp on the narrow chain
I've got a selection of pro grade saws 50- 60cc with plenty of power but still pick the wee 231 up before them for a lot of small hard wood/habitat/conservation jobs I do.

Wot is the biggest size u have to log/ring?
With a 14 or 15" bar u can log up to 30" timber, that's a fair stick esp if ur moving it by hand. A 231 would mange that ok
Althou be a pain cutting from both sides if constantly logging 2ft timber, althou it would stop u grounding ur chain cut half the roll log over..

hi guys, im after opinions on two chainsaws ms 211 or ms 231, dont want to risk second hand unless i really trust people, had a husky and had a few issue, ive got a couple of trees to fell then it will be for logging.
should i spend more or not worry? cheers guys
Every pro logger I know uses Stihl. That alone speaks volumes.

Most I know, including myself have a mix of both, althou to be fair thats quite an achievement as this used to be almost entirely husky area
Stihl have really upped there game and husky has dropped theirs ( althou they still make all there good saws just don't sell them in this country anymore)

Still see an awful lot of boys brashing with 550 and 560s very few small stihls about, but almost everyone has a 500i now

Avoid, if you can, the awful "easy start" system and the tooless adjustments that some of the Stihl "DIY level" saws come with.
Better to buy a cheap new saw than an unknown second hand one. I've found some of those little Stihls really do punch above their weight. In fact I've just bought myself an MS170 (the littlest of little).
Also looking, can I ask what is wrong with the easy start and toolless adjustment? Thanks

i had a husq with toolless tensioning it was rubbish, lost tension really quickly and needed a full replacement tensioner. no clue on easy start, ive decided to only use premixed aspen fuel as i wont be using loads

I have three Stihl chainsaws.
MS 390, 391 and 880 (I know - what was I thinking!).

Great kit.
If you can afford to then I would invest in a new saw - the other tip I was given was never lend yours to anyone...
Never lend them out this man knows.
I have the 181 and 461 and tbh the 181 is capable of felling 2foot diameter trees very nimble that's why I like it.
If you are going to be working with it day in day out for years get the pro ones but you don't really need to for once a month type jobs.

I've heard somewhere not to do drop starts with the easy start saws as it apparently stuffs them but otherwise I don't know anything else myself but I'm just a hobby user

I have one of them and the easy start is fine I've had mine for 4 years and gets used a fair amount in the winter summer not so much. The toolless chain tensioner is **** though fiddly and not that easy to adjust.

I have a little MS180 for occasional logging and clowning around in the garden. For anything big I call treedave!

A bit of digging around on youtube revealed an early clip of @Stalker1962 using his 880 for some hedge maintenance though!

As said before buy a professional one, the easy start systems are awful so is the easy tension system.

Growing up my dad was a tree surgeon and he had one we nik named Mr tiddles, was a tiny little thing only had a 4ft 11"bar on it.

Nothing wrong buying a second hand one if you know where its come from and you have got it from a reputable dealer who knows what they are on about! Some right cowboys out there!
