Still Using 4x32?

A bud was binning a scope some years ago in facvor of a trendy 6-24x50 some scope.....I clinched a 1980's Niko sterling 4x32 free , its on a 303 here, & superb with dozens of notches ;)

Just a quick question, anybody still shoot with open sights these days.

Oh yes! I was shooting field mice with an air rifle on my holiday in France over the last two weeks, and had to remove the little scope on it as it was close quarter combat with these little fellas! great fun and excellent practice for off-hand shooting too!

I could probably not see myself with iron sights for uk game, but could consider it for african bush game I think,,based on what I've read about hunting bush game

...of course, marginal differences in calibre choice between French field-mice and African game..

i managed to go stalking with some real old boys down at englefield last year they were great real old school when i got out my steyr ph with what i thought was a smallish 6x42 s/b they nearly fell about laughing ........at my huge scope on a military sniping rifle they had mannlichers older than me [44]with tiny zeiss scopes ,anyhow i had a few deer and so did they, learnt no end in just a few trips with em :)

6×42 lisenfeld on 22rf,6×42 Zeiss on 223rem,3.5 to 10 Leopold on 243win, always on 6×. Not a lot escapes a shot from any weapon, I truly don't feel the need for high magnification scopes.
If it works it doesn't need fixing.

Hmmm. Not for deer but I put a 1.5-6 on my new .22 stutzen which shot really well out to 100 or so. The weird thing though is at 1.5 you can clearly see the barrel and foresight through the scope pointing at your target - a bit like a computer game screen. Very odd but a different dimension to my shooting.

Scopes !

Not now, eyes don't work that way anymore.
I use 8x56 S&B scopes but was really p....d off when not able to use open irons anymore. Shot hundreds using open sights.

The same approach works for me.
Had a Nikko Sterling Tiara 4x28 on a .22 for years which accounted for thousands of rabbits. Then in the mid 1980’s had a ASI 4x32 wide angle on a 22rf with what they called a BDC turret on top. If my memory serves me well it stood for Bullet Drop Compensater (what will they think of next) which was more than adequate and gave sterling service. Have never gone above 6 power on my centrefire scopes either.

I have a fantastic Tasco Japan 4x40 which I have earmarked for a rifle

Lovely view through the thing, properly bright

zeiss diatal 4x32 on older Sako 243 great scope does it all for stalking / killing deer in general terms and great day scope. Hit stuff consistently out to silly distances when playing and would be quite happy to shoot nothing else for deer
Do have other scopes that I can see to the moon with though🙂

My 243 used to wear a zeiss 4x32. I went up to a 4-12x50 and stupidly sold the 4x32. It now wears a 3-9x36 - mostly kept at about 4x.

My Rigby has a 4x36 S&B. I also use a 1.5-10x44 Leica on it - mostly kept at 4x.

And my 7x65r wears a 6x42 for long range work and a 1-4x20 for driven.

A 4x is pretty much good for most shooting to be accurate but still wide field of view. Many militaries use 4 or 6x as the optic for marksmen rifles to provide quick, but accurate battlefield type fire.

Thank you. It is a Merkel double in 8mm . Made in 1926

cracker! of course, it can't hit a thing, without a moderator it's pretty useless, rainbow calibre, scope only good for air rifles at best, there's a trigger blade too many!, wooden stock doesn't work in the rain, cerakoating looks to have worn off, the scope rings seem to have become detached from the bases.

Send it to me, I'll get this relic put into scrap for you ;):p

On my 12-7x57R combi I have a factory fitted in 1976, Kahles 2.3-7x32 scope with #1 reticule. The Optics are still the best of any scope I own. I started with a Brno .243 fitted with a Zeiss Jena 4x32 also with a #1 reticle. I shot a lot of deer with that rifle/scope.
apart from sitting out at night nearly all my hunting is done with a 1-5x24 scope.
If we didn't have all these new all singing, all danceing scopes or wonder calibre rifles, and all the must have stalking gear how would the modern stalker be able to talk so much bollocks on stalking forums.
