Stock proofing dogs

I have seen a bull greyhound in full pursuit of an ewe with the intent to kill. The bloke had an ecollar on it and said to me he will not push the button or raise his voice to the dog at all until the dog makes contact. When the dog touched the sheep he would press the button which in theory would zap the dog! Through association the dog learned that the big fluffy sheep really hurts and was not worth the hassle. He did the same every lambing season and with the farmer present!

(There’s a lot of trust in the signal transmitter from device to collar.)

E collar for my setter, took him into a small field with a ewe and lambs , farmer ( a mate) ran them past him as I told him no. He was fine until a lamb came too close and he went for it. A sharp shock on the collar and he soon became cagey around sheep. Did this for a few weeks, now he shows no interest.

Moat of the land I hunt for snipe is open mountain & sheep run free so I hunt with the e collar on him at all times(although never need to use it). The dog won't go near the sheep, but if one of the farmers voices any concern I can advise that the dog's no chance of chasing sheep as I have control.

In relation to cattle- he got into the neighbours field as a pup and was chased for 5mins by a herd of bullocks, he was off hunting the hedge but the cattle took offense, I called him over and had to grab him by the collar over a barb and electric fence- he won't go near cattle now 🤣

He goes nuts around my duck pen, but that's to be expected, he's a bird dog, I've no doubt he'd have a ball of feathers on seconds left on the floor. The electric poultry fence keeps him out thankfully.

All the research that I have read, not that there is that much, concludes that positive reward training is more effective than e collar use. Arguments both for and against are usually either anecdotal or choosy as to what information they use, not unlike most other debates in life.

It seems alot of people on here have no idea of the difference between fear and respect.

Beating dogs belongs in the dark ages. Learn to train them properly.

You can get a garmin atemos and kt15 for £600, track and train function, but I would research how to use the correctly, garmin do some YouTube videos and some trainers have vids on how to use, perfectly legal in England

Pay the stock no attention yourself, if the dog looks at them at all turn the other way with a firm no ! Do this from a little puppy .
An older dog that takes to it is an entirely different matter , a correctly used e collar is a god send as long as tge dog never twigs its the collar not death Ray voodoo from the stock .
Steady to game is entirely different

I have always used the technique of popping them in a sheep pen for a moment or two it’s always worked and never done any harm.
