Straight Pull AR for stalking?

What’s the feasibility of using straight pull AR type rifle for stalking, specifically in 6.5CM (custom build of some sort)

It's perfectly feasible if you can convince yourself the rifle/ammo combination is accurate enough to reliably produce shots that are safe and kill humanely
I wouldn't go showing off your set up to other stalkers though - they tend to be quite traditional and your proposed set up is anything but that!

Cheers

This is what I thought, I don’t have a rifle yet as still waiting on my ticket to be sorted but watching some YT videos and see Americans seem to routinely hunt with semi auto AR pattern rifles.

Because they have semiautomatic and they can build their own as a godzillion parts are available in the local gun shop or mail order.

while I was waiting for a new barrel I used to stalk with a big black rifle. while it was fantastic from the highseat, the walk there was awful, the walk back with it and the deer/goat was worse. cleaning took forever.
btw another member has a very nice Mark Bradley AR10 he's thinking of parting with

No reason not to other than:

1) they are a noisy rifle - they clatter and make a sound everytime you knock them.

2) an AR was designed to function by a strong force of gas coming back to open the action. In the UK you cannot use this. All gas systems have to be removed so you are down to having to use the charging mechanism to cycle the action by hand. This works fine when the rifle is empty.

But in the club several have straight pull AR type rifles. They seem to frequently have stoppages when a cartridge case gets stuck.

3) if you want a metallic / plastic gun you are much better to choose a proper bolt action designed chassis type rifle. These work so much better and are much more reliable.

4) a lot of the chassis type rifles are really quite heavy with a lot of weight well forward. They are great on the shooting point. Horrible to carry across the field. Those rail type forends with piccatiny and other holes are sharp not comfortable to hold. Its why most tactical shooters wear gloves.

5) the UK countryside is still traditional and not sure many landowners welcome SWAT teams running around.

Definitely feasible. Folk may panic more if they see you out and about with one, but I've had folks panic about me out with a traditional 22lr. Many stalking rifles look like 'sniper' rifles these days anyway.

That aside, they can meet the accuracy and ballistic requirements and that's all that matters. Tend to be quite expensive for what you get. Very practical for attachments and stuff.
I'd not do it, but that's hardly relevant.

The action of a straight pull UK legal AR variant is very noisy. You can't close the bolt gently, it has to be allowed to return by the spring in the buffer tube that forms the backbone of the stock, making a loud metallic clank that will scare any deer in shooting distance. I had a Southern Gun Company Speedmaster for over 10 years, an excellent range rifle but I would never take one stalking. As someone has pointed out previously, the general public know little about firearms, seeing someone with a traditional looking stalking rifle may cause raised eyebrows, seeing someone creeping about armed with an AR is likely to initiate a panic stricken 999 call about a terrorist with a machine gun.

What is done in the US is quite a bit different to here, get what you want but there is a reason very few people use that style of kit over hear.
Some people wait to load a round when stalking (I don't) I guess that type will be noisy?
There won't be many people who have not snapped a twig and get busted with the noise!
Good luck.
