Absolutely correct about exceptions. We've had 9 dachshunds in total over the last 13 years and I wouldn't attempt to predict bidability without seeing a pedigree and even then, as said, individual variation occurs.
Personally, I don't know any that stalk to heel perfectly, off lead, in any circumstance and any degree of natural distraction. That's not to say they don't exist - but I wouldn't recommend it as 'the norm' to a prospective owner. There are lots of things that they are brilliant at - imho walking at heel, off lead in a hunting environment isn't one of them.
Keith - you are very welcome to come out with me and Wiggy any time should the circumstances allow I never now use a lead (tracker stays on just in case
). He's so good that after a week in Arran, his breeder wants him back for his own dog!
If he stalks perfectly at heel, under any circumstances.......all of the time, I don't doubt the owner wants him back but, as said, I wouldn't suggest to a potential owner that it was the norm.
I know a lot of breeders and self-styled breed ambassadors who feel that to promote a breed you have to tell all how wonderful they are. Personally, I see it differently, I think the responsibility is to warn potential owners of the pitfalls first. No breed is perfect and no individual within a breed is perfect.

About 5 or six years since i last ran down a dog , about a 4-500 sprint, I really thought i might have a hart attack but i caught it ! I also had a talk to myself and swore never again , was a time for that and boy could i run but its thirty years gone now LOL . He was a great dog mind even though he nabbed more long ears than the bigger lifetime bag than long dogs most of it guile and experience
Totally agree and you will well remember our conversations in the early days where I thought I was never going to get there. It is always a combination of the dog and its owner/trainer - the results depends totally upon how well each delivers its part.

Feels like we are pushing and pulling here? You've done a truly great job with your dog if it will stalk at heel, off-lead, all of the time, regardless of distractions (hare, rabbit, munty, pheasant etc).....I really cannot say it any more clearly - that really is a very, very good result - very well done.
My point was simply that I do not see that as 'the norm' for 100% working bred teckels. Show/work blends are a different matter but for 100% working bred, I do not know any (apart from yours) that walk steadily and perfectly to heel, off-lead, all of the time, while stalking.
Keith - we are coming at this from opposite ends I fear as I cannot believe I have the only Teckel that can stalk at heel. The prey drive is still strong and Wiggy's nose is constantly on the ground looking for smells and yes, he does get distracted on occasion but will 98% return on command. Occasionally, the Teckel in him comes through and through and last Friday night, he took off on shot chasing a roe buck probably in excess of 500m and wasn't stopping for anything giving voice throughout (Saturday's range proved 100m POI 7" to left 
).
My point is that its a combination of the dog and trainer that results in the finished product - just look at the Police/Military who take some really dysfunctional dogs and turn them into the best police or sniffer dogs. Not all within a breed are the same. Yes, any prospective Teckel owner needs to know that they can be little *****, but its not universal and mine turned a corner after 18 months. He's not only a great stalking companion but a much loved member of the family who has a special place in the hearts of all of the family.
Difficult to take videos whilst out stalking as both dogs are constantly cued on me watching my every move but a couple of gash videos from my stalk this morning and some photos. He stayed completely unrestrained for over an hour whilst I was in the high seat.

A definate truth there! Two brothers here, when I had not long collected them, in our garden at the old place in Chester. the one scraping his teeth blackboard style has mental fixation on the ball ... the other is a little more focussedI’m not sure how research will help
