Tentbox

I would say have a look at as many options as you can in the flesh so to speak, not just pictures online. Draw up a list of your criteria first. There are pros and cons for all types.

Definitely I would be looking at:

Simplicity (eg, no guy ropes or extra faffing about when setting up).

Heavy duty fabric (for example, the Ventura tents, which are probably nearest competitor to mine and very well known, have much thinner fabric than ours).

Amount of space per £ spent. You want at least a full double bed size.

One advantage of some of the hard shell tents is that you can fold them up with bedding inside.
A big advantage of the flip over tents (like mine) is the additional undercover space they create alongside the vehicle. Enough room for camp table and chairs if you want to be able to sit out of the rain!

Sound advice, thanks

Have looked at the roof tents for a while now, but the price and the added inconvenience of it on the roof full time is putting me off, will have to stick to my £30 tent and pike fishing bed for a bit longer. I can get this tent up in under 10 mins, taking down a bit longer especially if wet as have to dry it out at home first before being packed away.

I went with a tentbox classic and absolutely love it. Hard shell, I did add a mattress topper, leave that and my bedding and pillows in it, plus added led lighting strips in it that stay also, and it all packs down within it permanently. Costco had a great deal on them a few weeks back, came in just under £1700

Awesome bit of kit, i got mine as the area I have stalking is a few hours from home and it demands a good cull, to maximise my time I got the tent to this year. Have used it several times now and can’t complain.
I have a Tuff trek soft-top which is more that big enough for me and the misses when going camping trips.

Thinking about a tent box classic, for occasional use, has anyone had/used one of these, with either good or bad thoughts. Thanks in advance, jon

Get a swag tent. Much easier and practical it just fits in the truck bed and you can throw it on the floor. Love mine and have camped i some harsh weather and it’s been bullet proof. Also significantly cheaper.

Must admit I considered a swag, having used one in the past, and agree they’ll keep you snug and dry even in poor weather, but in poor (typical British winter weather) conditions I’d much rather, and do enjoy, the space a tentbox gives you when you come in wet and just want to get dry, warm and fed. Trying to do all that in a swag is not fun.

Not sure what size swag you have looked at but mines a double bed one and about the size of a roof top tent. Plenty of room to change etc. Obviously if you’re putting an awning on that’s a different kettle of fish but I have a 5x5 tarp I can hang over it which is eminently more practical.

I thought of roof top tent but too easy to forget and too many low barriers about here … I like roof for my h radio antennas!

I do have and can highly recommend a swag … got a decent size single one from Outhaus and it’s some bit of kit … tarp off roof bars would also help …
And yeah a fraction of price of these roof top tents…

I have a Tentbox Classic on my defender and they are amazing! I did a lot of research before buying and this was my choice as it also acts as a roof box when camping. You prepack all your duvet, pillows, clothes etc in the roof leaving the space for all the dirty **** in the back. Any questions about it feel free to ask and I’m in Wiltshire so if your local more than welcome to come have a look! It has never let me down and been out in it numerous times, I also have the insulation kit for winter! It stays on the truck the majority of the time even when off roading on Salisbury plain and out shooting, I have never had to do it but the shells are easily repairable and replaceable.

Be mindful of where you leave your vehicle with tent attached. Heard our local VW dealership had an amorak in for some work, and it was parked up in the dealership car park over night. Come the next morning the tent box had been cut off and taken!

They do seem great though, even my wife likes the idea so may look into it ourselves.
I have mine all set up with its own alarms, tracking unit and its insured.

I’m a fan of hard shell ones mainly because you can leave your bed setup and put a mattress topper on. They also are quicker to put up take down and more durable and better wind resistance.
