Hiya, I was asked along to a farm just a mile up the road from me to join on a driven fox shoot....the farmer has lost a good few chickens to a family of foxes...so, myself and a few other guns met at 9am this morning, all in place at 9.15am, and the hounds sent into the wood at the same time....by 9.45 , we had 4 fox's..., Thing is too, they were all males...and all about the same size..so, probs the same litter....there are still a few left to be dealt with, but that will be done another day..:)
Back in the house for 10.15am, and eating brekkie...:)

By the looks of things you had a good morning then. :) Well done Norrie, you'll be in the Farmers good books then.

Atb, Buck.

Hiya Roedeered...LOL, Hunting foxes with packs of hounds is still legal in Scotland, as long as it's on foot.,..today we only had 4 Beagles and a couple of Terriers, ...but it wasnt a big drive...we normally use up to 6 hounds, and can cover many miles in a day....we can also do up to 4-5 drives on a normal day out...:)
The farmer thanked us all personally., he's lost a load of Chickens and Ducks to this family of foxes......they were shot no more than a 100yds from the farmhouse where the birds are kept..:) We are back for the rest fairly soon. :)

Thanks for the kind words guys...makes it all worth while..:)

Hiya, Just a wee appendix to the post...On Sunday (yesterday) I went to one of my permissions fairly early, and caught a fox with it's head down a rabbit hole...its a non fox now...so, a great weekend...:)

Just had a phone call from one of the guys on the shoot on Saturday, a couple of them decided it was too early to go home, so moved on to the farm bordering the first one,,..they had a big dog fox with the hounds, chased it out a small stand of trees...and bang...:) Anyway, they went home after that, and my mate then got a call from the second farmer later in the day...., 40 mins after they left, there was a commotion in the chicken coop, he ran out to see the Vixen running off with a hen in its mouth!!!!!
Couldnt make it up...but hopefully, theres only the vixen left..:)

Thats a surprise Norrie thought you would have had a fistfull of keyboard warriors on your case.sounds like you could do with an army of fox shooters in your area.Been out tonight a few of us to check the woods with pens in thankfully found nothing even our solitery hound never spoke.;)

Thats the one thing I miss being where I live and work
organis4ed fox hunts with hounds
a good morning by all accounts before the pre-september cub hunts gets on the way, and a good day for the farmer too

Roedeerred
hunting is hunting no matter which way you look at it and it don't get much better than hunting with a gun pack

I used to shoot half a dozen times every winter with a "gun-pack" in Co Antrim. These guys had a pack of dogs which I think were beagle cross fell terriers. Usually six or seven dogs were used, driving lumps of cover to about a dozen guys with shotguns. They were fantastic in full cry. 6-8 foxes per day was not unusual.

Brilliant sport, I loved it.

Hiya, I dont understand why anyone would get upset about this...it's totally legal here in Scotland...and does the job very well..tho, as you say, and as I know only too well, there's always someone...

I usually shoot with some lads in Lanarkshire, we use a pack of around 6 Beagles, and a couple of others...we have permission on a few farms, and drive foxes out the woods into the guns..its very effective...and very enjoyable...apart from walking miles over the moors..:) As CG and RDR says, In full cry, the noise of the hounds makes the hairs on the back of yer neck stand up..very thrilling....:)
On my bigger permission, there are a lot of stands of woodland, and the farmer is very keen to get the pack in there too, but thats for later in the year...:) This was really a one off to get the chicken killers...:)

The record day here in Mid Wales is 23 foxes for a local gun pack to me. :ban:Ban - WHAT BAN !
The day started at 10.00am and number 23 was shot at approx 15.30pm. Now thats what I call a Red Letter Day

23... if it's the same pack I'm thinking of , back in 88 they had 17 in one day if I recall right, 12 out of one forest
not hunted with them

But I do miss my days out with the Afonwy , but don't miss the walking ...lol

Hi Stone. My hound (Sniper) used to hunt with Afonwy, back about 10 to 12 years. Les and Aled were the huntsmen back then. Great days had then, hunting in the local countryside, with the sound of thirty hounds in full cry echoing in the valley's
atb Gaz

Les was some guy
Infact it was Les who got me into hunting or should I say walking, he was one fit barsteward and made me follow him
I used to work with Les at the time so I had no choice..lol
funnily enough he still works for the same firm who is now run by one of my best mates
Aled was only young back then so never got to see him in action
To experience such a pack of Welsh fox hounds in action in all their glory was one thing, but to take a left & right at foxes on such a day was a crowning of glory
Now that was special
long live the Afonwy... long live the hunt
And raise a special glass to Mr Jones the ole bugger
