The Creedmoor changes you…

It’s a tikka 595 really nice woodland set up topped with a Zeiss diavari 3-12 x 56 i actually bought the rifle from a very good friend who had just had the barrel cut to 18 inch
yep, i could see that being really nice in the forrest. Perhaps especially if it's not modded. The best handling rifle i've ever shouldered was a 95 cm long, remington mohawk stutzen, with an 18 inch barrel on it. It came to the shoulder like a dream. 🤠

Knowing what you know now would you swap a 243 for a 6.5 CM. I keep going through this debate and can’t see the point in swapping. Perhaps if I was buying a first rifle then 6.5CM is a very good do it all, but for the smaller deer the 243 just works.
On balance, I think yes, I would swap.

The real advantage is the much broader range of >100gr bullets, which are better suited to wind and heavy bodies.

I go between wanting one and telling myself that within the 250 yards I generally shoot, it’ll make zero difference. All a bit too sensible!

Was listening to a podcast suggesting get a 6.5PRC cut down to 18” and still get 6.5CM velocities but nice and handleable

Nah!
You want real muzzle flash? Get a Mosin M44 and milsurp ammo.
May I suggest that you do not fire said M44 over dry grass, carpet etc…

This (the one in the foreground) is my woodland gun - rem 700 SPS with a 16” barrel, dpt end of barrel mod, dnt V2 and in an mdt oryx stock.
So far this winter I have killed more with this rifle than my other two out together, largely because I have been going out in the evening and the NV allows me to shoot out to the hour.

Cracking little piece of kit, but I am going to flip from 150gn Ecx to 125gn cx bullets because the Ecx don’t expand much in smaller deer. Other than that it’s as accurate as you would like.

I'm feed averse... There something very reassuring about the way the 270 feeds that inspires confidence. Always found the Creed to be a little clunky feeding, especially in T3, where it could hang up if you tried to cycle the bolt slowly.

Yes, all with mods.

I shot without mods for much longer than most. But my hearing was deteriorating badly.
ah, ok, i am sorry to hear that Mungo :( I imagine the 6.5pc is quite comfortable to shoot with a mod though :)

Well that could make sense, as smooth feeding was a particular advantage of many of the tapered case designs, like the 7x57 (and it's family) and the 06 and its family, i believe. 🤠
On the negative side, that means that they naturally need to be a little bit longer than a more straightwalled design to contain the same amount of powder, and they might also burn the powder an itsy bit less effeciently too, from what i understand, but it is something for something, i guess. 👍

Yes - very.

I almost always keep the sight picture.

I wouldn’t go back to shooting without a mod now, even if it messes with the balance of the gun and looks horrible.

yep, if i was shooting something bigger than the 6.5x57 or 7x57, i would probably opt for it too. The 6.5 creed with a mod must be very very comfortable to shoot 🤠
