The English Distillery

There is an English Distillery in Norfolk.

I know right!

I bought some 'stuff' from there in (I think 2008) - it was undrinkable. I poured it onto the lawn (true) and it killed the grass.

Never again.

Or so I thought. I recently read that they had won an award, for their Single Malt (Sherry Cask Matured). OK, thinks I. Perhaps they have got their **** together - perhaps I should give them another go.

Earlier this year I took a leap of faith and bought some 'stuff', from them...

It has been sat sitting in my 'study' ever since.

I will not bore you dear reader (although I accept I almost certainly do), with the 'why's and wherefores', but today, today, I thought I may just break them open and have a wee tasting session...

Well from garden killer to really, really, nice 'stuff'. Whatever they are doing (that they clearly were not in 2008), they are now knocking it out of the park.

Just in case you fancy a change from the usual.

So, in the words of any Turkish plastic surgeon, who specialises in buttock augmentation...

I will raise a glass tonight, in memory of a fallen colleague - and I will do so with English Whisky. He would appreciate the irony...

"Here's to you Raj".

Funnily enough, that’s what the Mesopotamians say about the Scottish stuff.
They obviously mean that horrible Islay stuff :stir: 😆

Truth be told, there's a lot of snobbery when it comes to whisky, and there are so many permutations of the stuff, even from within the same distilleriesand regions, that I don't think anyone can really define a 'better' whisky from any other. It all comes down to personal preference. I'm pretty certain the whisky @Stalker1962 will be drinking this evening gives anything a run for its money 😃

I fed some Scottish stalkers some English whisky and after much eye scrunching and frowning the response was ‘I’ve had worse’

They then proceeded to poison me with whyte and McKay that left me unable to even smell whisky ever since without gipping! (I maintain i was dehydrated from a long difficult drag which in fairness was self inflicted and it’s certainly nothing to do with the quantity drunk!)

In 2008 it was in its first year of trading, despite many critics and cynics they've won many awards over the years, it’s not cheap but it’s also not bad, if you want a lovely tipple try their norfolk nog, like baileys only much nicer, pure amber nectar in the colder months.

The Scots keep the good stuff and export the rest to the English.

A neighbour of mine is the whisky barrel trade, as in sourcing and making wooden barrels for the whisky industry. His biggest customer are in India. They make huge quantities of Whisky - many with a Scottish theme for their domestic market. The proper stuff imported from Scotland accounts for a very small percentage of the total drunk in the sub continent.

And never ever take on a Scottish stalker at drinking whisky. You will be in a very very sorry state.

I have enough Whisky stashed away in the garden bar and in the house to sink a battleship. Most clients seem to drop a bottle off to me, even though I am not a huge drinker.
Either way, Whisky never seems to taste quite the same, unless you are by an open fire, in the Highlands after a day on the hill or forest and a stag in the larder.

I still think the Scots have the drop on us, the Irish, Japs and the Welsh for Whisky. The variety of styles and flavours is bewildering. Not one of these countries comes close to sharing a table with our beer or cider. Well...Gillespies Stout did. That was a beer that could make a beauty out of an angry spaniel -and occasionally did in my student days.
The point to consider with Whisky -as in all things specialised by origin- is the same point you consider when lining up a buck that might be better left for the rut...just because you can, doesn't mean you should.
Having said that. Much more anti-English chatter from papers North of the border and I'll happily switch to drinking diesel rather than Scotch.
