I'm not a deer stalker but as said before people don't get their noses out of joint if a rabbit is head shot, infact it's more considered the preference.
So other than one animal being considerably larger why not? If you want to drop your quarry on the spot head shots are considered the shot to take right? I believe there's a high shoulder shot placement for deer that will have same effect??? As said I'm not a deer stalker so not knowledgeable on such placements.
An old Fieldsports Britain video had Andy Crow taking 3 pricketts from a high seat with headshots all on the spot with no follow up or blood trails needing to be followed.
Personal preference on the shooter and the conditions of taking the shot I say.
Spotlighting over the last 40 odd yrs I've seen and done a lot of head shooting on big red deer especially with a .222 or .223.Last year was the first time I got it wrong on a thumping Sambar and blew its bottom jaw to pieces, it was bloody terrible and something I don't want to repeat in a hurry. The sound of the majestic animal rasping its breathing at distance in thick scrub was gutting.Luckily I got a 2nd shot 20 mins later and put it out of its misery.Would I try another one..probably if I was using the .222 and it was the only animal part I could see but most deer I tip over nowadays with .308 and theres no money in venison here anymore commercially.
