We've seen loads of advice as to how to choose a guide for accompanied stalking, and what to look for when booking stalking, finding a syndicate, etc.

But what of the flip side? What do experienced guides look for and expect from their ideal client? Look forward to hearing some great stories! (And possibly some not so great! )

The ideal clientele are female!

Men are nothing but a pain in the arse, they have male ego they have bullheaded pig ignorance, I’m going to do this, I want to do that, I want to do this. I want to do that whereas the women hang off every word and instruction you say they want to learn they want to be good at what they do in a man’s world.

Personally, I wouldn’t give a rats backside if I didn’t guide a man ever again!

That’s why the ladies Artemis stalking group have all my cull day bar 1

I'm an ideal client and present a perfect opportunity for banter...I own a Creed

Simple bits for me are - be polite, establish the ground rules, make sure (even more then when out on your own) of muzzle awareness at all points, dont get frustrated if things dont go exactly to plan...most of all enjoy

The tribe as I call them, they’ve been coming now for five years most of them shoot a creedmoor I believe me they get as much stick or even worse than you do!

And I won’t on a public forum post what their usual reply is

The last time I guided male stalkers, one bloke took it upon himself with his 308 to leave his seat and go and shoot a roe doe when he wasn’t even supposed to be shooting roe I also have women who shoot 270 and can handle it!

What are you have got to understand about The tribe is they don’t give a **** and they’ll soon tell you they don’t give a ****, and that’s without the word **** and prick and ****ead thrown in for good measure

A man with a 270 and can handle it nowadays is a very rare occurrence. You can consider yourself on my special list.

+1 for happier taking a woman out. Nothing worse than the male client, who has never been on your ground before, telling you that you are approaching a deer wrong. Time in question was when I was the stalker on Sannox Estates on Arran. One group of German stalkers. The men were not bad really. The men shot Monday through to wednesday. The wives shot at the end of the week. I came into the lodge with one of the wives and her stag. The husband came over for a look. Then he turned to me and said. John , when we go out with you , we get ok stags. When my wife goes with you , she gets a beautiful stag. Why. I turned ans said. This is the stag I took you into yesterday. You mucked it up, she didn't. Everyone erupted in laughter. They knew I was right. J

I wouldn't dream of behaviour like that. Even if I was convinced the guide was in the wrong. I'm there as a client, not an instructor. If it's that's bad it just means the tip gets smaller.

But it cuts both ways. A recent experience on a 'new to me' estate saw us winded by deer after deer. I was using a puffer to check wind direction and couldn't understand why we were continually bumping deer. Until I turned around and saw my guide enveloped in a vast cloud of watermelon-flavoured ruddy vape mist

I mostly stalk alone. But Id like to think stalkers like people that are safe, do what they are told, walk quietly, don't shoot beyond their capabilities, hang back a bit and don't add extra movement, BUT maybe its just the size of the tip $£?

The worst by far that ive had out have been "ex military"!
20 yrs in the military, fired more calibres than you can think of, can hit man sized targets at 1000m, know all my drop data out to 500m, thats the kind of pis# that they tell you on the phone and you just know they're going to be hard work!
Too cocky with a know it all attitude.

The ideal client??? Hmmmm......
1)turns up on time
2)kitted out properly
3) is safe
4) is good company
5)shoots the right deer/type of deer/sex of deer
6)walks quietly and follows the stalker
7) pays a good/sensible tip
8)enjoys the day
9) doesn't tell the stalker how to do his/her job
10) goes home happy just glad to have been out for a day/evening/morning
and 11) enjoys being taken the **** out of when things don't go entirely to plan.......
But that's enough about me.........
