I was out recently on a morning stalk. Enjoyed it, didn't really see much of the ground, but managed to get onto two calf fallow after an easy wander around. No shot as they were in a group and milling around unsettled. I thought £20 was appropriate, although in all truth it was pretty easy money for the guide.

Nothing is easy money when your a guide, you’re just taking it face value on the day, what you’re not seeing is the hours that a guide put in to the ground finding the animals knowing where to go knowing what class of animal there is in that area it’s not as simple as what you think just because you get out of the truck go around the corner and you see animals that makes you think it’s easy rest assured I guarantee you it is not !

Fairly sure if I'd been left to my own devices there'd have been a different outcome. There wouldn't have been plumes of watermelon vape, for a start
I lost count of the number of fallow that winded usI had two in my scope. Even though I had no shot I still class that as a successful stalk

There was a deer in my scope. Twice. That, to me, is a success. Just because it didn't result in a deer on the ground is neither here nor there.

I went stalking to Scotland in the summer with two friends, it was the end of of the roe rut , I knew that but it was more for my friends than me, I had a fantastic time although I didn’t pull the trigger I personally tipped all three guides £50 each. It’s not about pulling the trigger. It’s about experiencing the whole thing and enjoying yourself. If you’ve had a good time I feel no guilt in the slightest about tipping for the privilege.

Sounds as if you were both at fault not feeling the wind. If you lost count of so many deer winding you it was as much your fault for not saying anything. I tend not to turn up on new ground and immediately start telling my guide what he's doing wrong
