The Nuisance Of Dog Walkers

if anyone approachs me while im out with my gun, so im totally covered, i film them on my iphone (ok in a public place) always start the video by saying a man/women is approaching me and the gun is unloaded and safe, best evidence you can get is a video, be very polite and tell them to get on the footpath or leave and keep smiling at them and call them sir or maddam.
and watch them get very ****ed off (all on video) while i say sir/maddam etc etc very politely , then if anything comes of it show the police you being very polite etc etc and a crazy women ranting away at you.
it wont take the police long to make there mind up.

+1 - I have used the same tactic, and it produces amazingly good results. Especially, if you can also provide the police with a Reg no for their vehicle....

A friend has gone one further, and got a Go Pro camera attached to the front of his bino harness.... HD picture, good definition, and sound, it is mega..... First time he ran in to someone and asked them to leave he got all the abuse under the sun, and recorded it, but asked them politely to discontinue their walks... Second time he found them, he gave them a CD of the recording of the first incident, and said a second copy was going to the police..... Job jobbed.....

Good luck, but use technology to your advantage.

All the best.

Neil.

Cheers guys the bit of ground is a large area, roughly 700 acres so i could move elsewhere but the areas I'm concentrating on are the newly restocked areas which both happen to be near the road and that's the areas I would like to keep the numbers down so I don't get the forestry company on my case for any damage. Tbh 6p I would rather take her bull mastiff a walk in the woods lol she's not the brawest thing I've ever seen!! It wouldn't b so bad if she came at say 7-8am but she's up there at crack of dawn, the earlier it gets lighter the earlier she appears. I have put up signs saying stalking in progress dogs to b kept on lead but it doesn't make a blind bit of difference and I'm also a bit apprehensive about stalking areas further afield when I no she is in the vacinity as I want to be able to see my car incase her mutts cause any further damage.

Im afraid tresspass on normal land is now a civil matter and the police will do nothing, all you can do is be polite and ask the people to stick to the footpaths.
We shoot on a working quarry where tresspass is still regarded as a criminal offence because it has the same status as MOD land, there is a track through the middle gated at each end with comprehensive warnings yet walkers, dog walkers, cyclists and twitchers think they have a right to be there just because there is a track, in four years of shooting there we have yet to have a day where we have not had tresspassers.
We explain the situation every time but we are just ignored, even when the boss is shooting with us and he pulls them up he gets told to **** off, we have been walking here for years, it is only a threat of the police action thats gets these people to leave.
We have also had to move on eastern european as well as english anglers who have been fishing some of the pits, explaining they are poaching, only myself and my shooting partner have permission to shoot and fish there.

I have reduced my confrontations by locking the gate and putting barb over the top to prevent people climbing over. There are too many entrances into the woods that have had the gates ripped down by I believe off road bikers but the forestry commission advise me they have a plan to stop it in the future. They haven't told me yet what their master plan is but it does involve the Police. I also advised one regular who ran her dog through the woods that we now have fox snares down and her pet could get trapped. Haven't seen her since.

Bigboab lock the gate with a padlock and chain when your in there with your signs up stalking in progress also as said snares in use keep dogs on lead I had same problem woman told me to drop dead charming eh

It's worth pointing out to her that there is no "right to roam", only a "right of respsonsible access" in Scotland.
Since her dogs were not on a leash and were possibly chasing deer when they were heavily pregnant, she was not behaving responsibly and perhaps add that you could report her to the SSPCA.
All on camera of course.

Couple of things spring to mind I'm pretty sure she is committing aggravated trespass this is arrest able see the link.
Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994

i suggest get some trail cams and film the confrontations as already suggested. The other is get a pic of the mastiff x as it could be a pit x and is committing a further offence. If that is a none starter allowing the dogs to put you in fear of danger of getting bitten then that's another.

see this link. Dangerous Dogs Act 1991

Ditto, a high quality trail cam, with a large SD card, set to video in 1 minute segments is worth it's weight in gold. They will be date/time stamped and the video allows a fuller idea of the behavior. Set it near the gate, perhaps where it has your car in view.

Then you can document her comings and goings, the actions of her dogs vis a vis your vehicle, etc... Turn it all over to the police along with a written complaint.

A further option that is legal though a bit underhanded would be to acquire some mink or skunk musk and place it near the gate. The dogs will surely find it, roll in it, and her drive home each morn may become considerable more unpleasant.

Lets get this into the real world. It is Scotland so she can in fact do what she likes as long as she dose not damage anything or walk about fully naked.
We don't have defined public foot paths like in England just a few odd walks that are on some old maps that people follow. Also her dogs do not need to be on a lead as long as she has them under control.

1. I don't think its in Scotland
2. The dog is not under control
3. Its not a footpath or any where that right to roam can be applied

So yea - get it into the real world!

Original poster certainly is not in Scotland but the thread seems to have wandered to Bigboads problem which is Scotland
The dogs in question certainly don't sound under control and are therefore a threat to ground nesting birds, fawns etc so there is possibly something to throw at her there.
I avoid confronting anyone even with a firearm in a bag like the plague. It's something that however polite you are can go seriously bad should the person you go to decide to make things difficult for you.It happens

Hi scubadog, I know the op wasn't talking about Scotland but I kinda jumped in and hijacked the thread a little and the said pest is defo up in scotland.m so she does have the right to roam but her dogs were most definitely not under control. She roars and shouts at them all the way up the road you can hear her coming from a mile away!! She is walking along a private forestry track and although she isn't breaking the law she is causing damage ie the out of control dogs jumping all over me and my parked up car which she denies. I would have absolutely no objections if she walked up the road quietly with the dogs under control but they are 300 yards away from her out working in the ruff where I'm trying to shoot and as stated above the will b stressing out heavily pregnant does and no doubt in the next few weeks the fill get hold of a kid in the cover. I know there's not much I can do but I will go down the sign route and will film any further encounters with her. Just had a bit of a rant had to get of my chest but i Spose these type of people are sent to test us:)

Last evening i went to a Local Farm to clear up a few Rabbits, and on arriving at the field i intended to look around i was met by a man and woman and a dog,the dog was running a muck all over the place and as i took my Rifle from it's sleeve the man said don't fire that while we are here, i replied well there is no public right of way through this field no footpath etc so you should not be in here anyway, his reply was so we got the right to ramble. He then went on to say his wife did not like guns,my reply was well if you were not trespassing on Private land and had your dog on the lead we would not be having this conversation so grab your dog and leave the way you came. The man got a bit up tight so me having a unloaded rifle in my hands chose my words carefully but made it clear he had to leave, they both left the field and after a few minutes as i was starting my walk he drove into the field and wrote down the number of my Truck and then drove out and away.I walked back to my Truck and then dialed 101 and had to explain to the Police what had just happened they were ok about it and made a Log to that effect, that was Avon and Somerset i then had to ring Devon And Cornwall to report it aswell because the Farm fields borders the 2 counties, it was not to much of a problem but cost me phone calls to the Police i then had to phone the Farmer and go through it all again with him just in case the Police got intouch with him. I have shot this Farm for best part of 40 years and i never phone the Farmer to let him know i am out there unless he has a Frisky Bull out and then i like to know where it is.It was no big Problem but it was the way the Man and Woman thought they had more right to be there than me,it was only last year when i went to the same field 6.00am one morning to shoot some pigeons on the Stubble when this time there was a woman riding her bloody horse around the field, people just think they can walk where they like .Not only they have no right to be in the fields they scare away the Quarry that i am trying to shoot.

Fully sympathise with you fella but to be honest, it would have been better if you had left your rifle in the slip. If confronted by anyone (whatever the rights or wrongs), you put yourself in a much better position if you unload and slip your firearm.

Seem to remember there might even be something along those lines in the DSC literature.

Leave the gralloch out for the dogs, that normally puts a stop to them

This is also my approach, I've had repeat offenders in the past and have left goodies (Rabbit, Squirrel or Deer intestine) for the dogs. It's never failed for me, either they fear the dogs have been poisoned or they don't like the mess that results from it.

Tried this approach at the weekend, got a small buck last nite and left the gralloch etc - hopefully the dogs will have found it this morning as it was in there usual patch and she will have some lovely skoots to clean up, maybe make her think twice. Got a few more signs as well will be going up this week:)

mix a large dose of dog laxative in some offal or dog food and leave that out, she will have a lovely trip home if you can put it there after she goes for walkies.:)
