it would be interesting to see the age groups of people for and against?
if women feel uncomfortable with being ww's at should we even think we should carry on doing it?
i worked in construction in the early 2000's and never really saw it.
last year whilst working on a scaffold, the scaffolds sounded like deranged baboons howling at any women that passed. it was shocking, local scaffold company that i would never advise any one to use!
somethings i think are best left in the past
By coincidence this subject came up at the weekend dinner table, talking with my Mother in law (aged 85), partner (50) and youngest daughter (17)
Mother in law was of the opinion that it was a compliment and harmless in her day, to be expected if walking past a building site for example, wife felt whilst it was probably largely harmless, but what ever was the point? she certainly didn't see it as a compliment, just as "laddish" behaviour done to impress mates. Youngest daughter (who unsurprisingly gets it the most) thought it was pretty pathetic and ignores it, especially as it nearly always comes from a certain type of man (I wouldn't wish to offend anyone here by describing the type but certainly old enough to know better, especially considering the obvious age of the target). Wife and daughter have both been in scenarios where they felt deeply uncomfortable when it happened (walking along a residential street alone). All 3 hold gentlemanly behaviour like holding a door in the highest regard but would answer a pat on the bum with a swift slap round the face, followed up with loud public humiliation.
They'd love to know honest answers to a couple of questions for those that still do wolf whistle.
1. Do you wolf whistle at women when you are on your own? or with your partner? or only when with mates/male colleagues?
2. If you're genuinely paying a compliment to a woman, do you ww at a good looking man?
3. How would you feel (presuming heterosexuality) if you were walking alone and got WW at by a group of openly homosexual men?
4. Has a ww ever been a successful strategy in finding a partner?
Whilst I certainly don't buy into any extreme feminism any more than I do veganism, I can certainly see why women would be offended or feel threatened by WW's, seems to me to be something from a different age, like Carry On films or dragging women into a cave by their hair.
